News: Solaglas Windowcare wins health and safety award

By

Rotherham-based window repair and replacement expert Solaglas Windowcare has recently been presented with a prestigious award for a health and safety initiative by parent company Saint-Gobain at their annual Diamond Awards.

The Health and Safety Diamonds were established by Saint-Gobain to reward those demonstrating excellent health and safety performance.

The award was presented to Kevin Thornhill (Maintenance Services Manger), Jon Cornforth (EHS Manager) and their Working and Heights project team. The team came up with a simple, yet highly effective way to completely mitigate the risk of their engineers falling from height from vehicles.

Previously, ladders were secured on top of the Solaglas Windowcare vehicles and engineers had to climb a ladder at the back of the vehicle to then pull the ladders down.

Following an extensive review and successful pilot, the team are now rolling out a completely new layout, meaning that ladders will be safely stored within the vehicle. Not only does this completely cut out the risk of falling, but it also means the ladders are stored securely.

Managing Director, Ian Davy, said: "As a business we have worked hard over recent years to develop a strong health and safety culture. Jon has driven this culture change by encouraging employees across the business to become involved and engaged with health and safety.

"The transformation has been remarkable and health and safety is now a mindset rather than an aside. Although the development is incredibly pleasing, we are aware that health and safety will always require investment and that we are only at the beginning of our journey."

Based at Hellaby, Solaglas Windowcare is the UK leader in the repair and replacement of windows and doors on behalf of major organisations including those from the insurance, commercial and public sectors. Currently, the business has 325 employees and last year reported turnover of over £23.5m. Parent company Saint-Gobain collectively employs 16,500 people in the UK and Ireland.
