News: Korean order for Martek

By

Rotherham-based Martek Marine has announced another international order for their MariNOx product.

The Manvers company is the world leader in safety and environmental monitoring equipment for commercial ships.

Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. Ltd (DSME) in Korea has selected the MariNOx engine emissions monitoring system for four new vessels being built for Italian shipowner, Ignazio Messina.

The roll-on roll-off carriers will be unique in that they will be the largest of this type of vessel ever built, and they will be the first of their type to be built to RINA Green Plus environmental notation.

Green Plus notation is granted to new vessels which make a significant investment in design solutions, onboard equipment and operational procedures which contribute to an improvement in environmental performance beyond the minimum levels required by international regulations on environmental protection. It allows owners to select different types of equipment that will be of environmental benefit to the vessel.

DSME were awarded the $300m contract in December 2009 and Messina had included in their specification the requirement for emissions monitoring for NOx, SOx and CO2 from the main engine, generators and boiler.

The 240 metre-long vessel will have a capacity of 350 tonnes and will be able to carry 1,500 vehicles inside the ship's body and 3,000 6 metre containers on the ship's upper deck.

Having worked with Martek on a number of other projects requiring continuous emissions monitoring systems in the past, DSME again turned to Martek to assist them with this groundbreaking project.

Last year, MariNOx was selected for two new 147,000 m3 liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers being built in the massive DSME shipyard.

MariNOx was the world's first Type Approved on-board NOx, SOx and CO2 emissions monitoring system and Martek will work with RINA, the international certification society, to pioneer the first Type Approval of monitoring equipment to meet Green Plus notation standards.
