News: The Works opens in Rotherham town centre
Britain's leading discount book store, The Works has opened on Effingham Street in Rotherham town centre.
The retailer stocks books, toys, gifts, stationery and arts & crafts at discount prices, and sell over one million products every week to consumers looking for a bargain.
The opening is part of the ambitious West Midlands company's goal of operating 1,000 UK stores and with target of 50 new stores a year, Rotherham was one of 750 potential market towns identified for a new store.
Retail Week reports that Leeds-based private equity house Endless, which owns The Works, plans to sell the retailer next year with a price tag of £80m, after a significant turnaround since falling into administration in January 2008.
The bookseller is understood to have generated EBITDA (income) of £10m in the year to April 30. Latest accounts filed at Companies House show The Works recorded total sales of £88.8m in the year to April 25, 2009.
