News: Supermarket developments in Rotherham
Large scale retail developments are progressing in Rotherham, inside and outside of the town centre.
One of the largest and most significant is the development for Tesco by Anglo-Dutch developer, TCN UK on the site of the current civic buildings.
In 2008, the developers secured a five year exclusivity agreement with the council to develop vacant land following the disposal of council buildings and work is well underway on the new civic offices on the former Guest and Chrimes site at Main Street.
Key to the Rotherham Renaissance programme, TCN will purchase the council's 236,000 sq ft Civic Site once Rotherham council relocate from it in 2012.
Last week, members of the council's Regeneration Scrutiny Panel heard how the deal is undergoing legal completion and that draft designs have been received for the new 130,000 sq ft Tesco supermarket on the site.
On the edge of town, Wetherby-based developer, Oakgate, is applying to remove a condition of planning permission that restricts the former B&Q unit on Tenter Street to non-food retail. This would create a 31,000 sq ft unit with 18,600 sq ft of floorspace.
The plans would also replace the outdoor garden centre area with car parking to create 195 spaces on the site. Hoping to open in 2013, a store would create 150 jobs.
Further out of town, on Meadowbank Road, The Tabacon Group, a London based investment and property development company, are looking to develop a 66,000 sq ft superstore for J.Sainsbury's.
In 2003 the Group acquired 20 acres of land close to Junction 34 of the M1 which was followed by the purchase of the adjacent 10 acres of land in 2006. Planning consent for a mixed use development scheme on part of the site was secured in 2007 for a retail unit, a hotel, drive-thru restaurant and pub on the site but it has not yet been built.
