News: Rotherham's retail revival continues

By

The team tasked with reviving the retail offer in Rotherham town centre are continuing to bring in more outlets.

With over 30 new businesses opening since January, another three are set to open over the coming weeks and the council's The Business & Retail Investment Team are reporting a strong pipeline of live enquiries.

A new coffee shop is set to open on the corner of Imperial Buildings overlooking the Minster. Sayas coffee shop is opening with the help of a business vitality grant and will offer coffees and speciality waffles.

Pin Mei Chinese Restaurant, located in the former Dragon Peal restaurant on High Street, will offers delicious authentic cantonese cuisine.

Recently opened in the former Millets store on Howard Street, Park Mills Ex-Catalogue Shop has a great range of homeware and electricals.

In a report to the council's Regeneration Scrutiny Panel last week, Tim O'Connell, Business & Retail Investment Team Manager, outlined their successful proactive approach to securing investment into the town centre using lessons learned from RiDO's wider inward investment activity.

Direct contact with retailers with known requirements or a customer profile that matches Rotherham's demography has proved very successful along with networking with intermediates such as property agents.

As a result the team has a strong pipeline of live enquiries including two major coffee chains, one of the UK's leading young clothing brands, a retailer of perfumes and associated products, a restaurant chain operating corporate stores and franchise stores, a gentleman's outfitters and an affordable clothing and lifestyle products retailer selling clothes and home ware that has over 200 stores across the UK. Five major national stores are also interested in the units within the Interchange mall area.

The report added that the proactive approach will continue with work to strengthen relationships with agents representing national stores with a view to attracting them to the town centre and direct contact with key decision makers within retail organisations.

Early stage approaches will also be made to key retailers when there are potential losses to the town, for example, when lease terms are coming to an end. The team are also looking to work more closely with the Planning Service to ensure properties fit the needs of national stores looking to come to Rotherham.
