News: Stadium construction project kicks off with search for local contractors
Local contractors are being sought by GMI Construction to supply products for the £20m community stadium for Rotherham United.
The club announced that Leeds-based GMI Construction, the company currently building the new civic offices for Rotherham Council, will construct the stadium on the Guest and Chrimes site, when they unveiled designs for the 12,000-seater venue in February.
Now the company is hosting a "meet the buyer" event at Magna in Rotherham later this month to raise the awareness of potential opportunities for local sub-contractors in relation to the construction works.
The event will bring together key decision makers from GMI Construction and local sub-contractors and suppliers from the Yorkshire and Humber area, in particular Rotherham-based businesses.
The event is being coordinated by The Construction Sector Network, an innovative initiative that has been established to lead and support the construction sector in the Yorkshire and Humber region.
The move is part of GMI Construction's commitment to corporate social responsibility and GMI Construction and Rotherham United are fully committed to working in collaboration with the local supply chain.
Paul Whitaker, Commercial Director at GMI said: "With GMI's established Yorkshire roots, we are very proud to be celebrating our 25th year of operation in the construction industry. GMI has received tremendous support over the years and we recognise the shared value that can be gained by working collaboratively with local suppliers where ever possible."
Tony Stewart, Chairman of Rotherham United added: "The Community Stadium will be a major asset for the town that will benefit the community and local economy for years to come. The club have a strong culture and history of supporting local people and local businesses and we are committed to continuing with this valuable work. Local businesses have a real opportunity to be part of the supply chain for this iconic development."
The stadium is being built by GMI Construction on the old Guest and Chrimes foundry site close to Rotherham town centre. Groundworks on the site are imminent with the main stadium construction taking place in Summer 2011 ready for completion by the 2012/13 season.
The event takes place at Magna on May 31. To register for the event please contact Construction Sector Network by Email: csnevents@leedsmet.ac.uk / or Tel: 0113 812 1902.
