News: Dragonfly PR helps launch enterprise challenge

By

Dragonfly Public Relations in Rotherham has become a Schools Champion at Barnsley Academy in Kendray, offering advice to pupils about setting up a business.

As part of Barnsley Enterprise, the Manvers company will act as mentors in encouraging the teams throughout the competition. The challenge is run by Business & Education South Yorkshire, in collaboration with the Entrepreneur Exchange, Barnsley Council and Barnsley Work and Skills Board.

They spent their first session with the Year 9 business studies students from the academy, advising them on setting up and running their own events business. The first big event they are working towards is planning a car boot sale and family fun day, which will take place at the school in July.

The challenge called "I know I can" Barnsley Enterprise Challenge 2011 involves students from three Barnsley secondary schools and two educational centres having the chance to start their own businesses, with a view to keeping these small businesses running for as long as possible.

Karen Edwards from Dragonfly PR, said: "The pupils were very enthusiastic about the challenge. I talked to them about different roles within a business, the need to have a team leader and to delegate tasks. They made a lot of progress in planning their event, addressing issues around pricing, promotion and how much profit they expect to make. They all seemed really excited about the chance to host their own event."

John Barber from the Entrepreneur Exchange run by Business & Education South Yorkshire, added: "This type of challenge has worked really well in Sheffield and we were really keen to see how it would engage students in enterprise activities in Barnsley.

"It is so important to have involvement from local business people, as this really makes a huge difference to the pupils, by bringing the world of work into the classroom. It also means that they can question the entrepreneurs about their own experiences in setting up a business and how they overcame problems and made it a success."
