News: Rolls-Royce's investment in Rotherham to top £70m

By

The initial investment from world-renowned engineers, Rolls-Royce in new facilities in Rotherham is set to top £70m, even before plant machinery and staff are taken into account.

UK Coal announced in their financial results last week that they had completed the deal with Rolls-Royce for 17.4 acres of land on the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) in Rotherham.

Harworth Estates, the property arm of UK Coal has now confirmed that the deal is for the sale of 32 acres of land on the AMP and is worth around £11m.

Lambert Smith Hampton (LSH) has advised and marketed the site and advised Harworth Estates throughout the process.

Owen Michaelson, managing director of Harworth Estates, said: "We are delighted to have Rolls-Royce as our new principal occupier on the AMP site which helps to underpin the support and trust we have had from Rotherham Council, Sheffield Council and Yorkshire Forward."

Rolls-Royce has secured outline planning permission for three facilities in Rotherham.

The first to come forward is the Advanced Blade Casting Facility to be built as a sister factory to an existing operation in Derby. The 14,900 sq m factory will manufacture fan blades, principally for the aerospace sector.

A 21,000 sq m "Project PoWeR" facility is planned for manufacturing and assembling power vessels for the next generation of nuclear power stations and a 8,800 sq m building which could be for another Rolls-Royce facility or for one of their suppliers.

Together, they could create 360 jobs initially.

Construction firms are currently bidding for the work to build the factories for Rolls-Royce. The tender for the Project PoWeR facility is reported to be worth £35m and the tender for the Advanced Blade Casting Facility is reported to be £25m.

Consultants, URS, who have put the plans together for Rolls-Royce, has stated that the company expects to be able to appoint a building contractor in the near future and to start on site this Spring.

The AMP is the UK's premier advanced manufacturing technology park, and is a key part of the Sheffield City Region Enterprise Zone. Sites suitable for major capital investment are offering 100% Enhanced Capital Allowances to firms making significant investments in plant and machinery. Small and medium-sized businesses can qualify for Business Rate Relief worth up to £275,000 over a five-year period when they move on to selected sites.
