News: Events boost footfall in Rotherham town centre
Taking part in national, high profile events is helping to bring more people into Rotherham town centre.
Recent figures show a positive week-on-week footfall increase, up 13.3% in Rotherham, as the town celebrated Armed Forces Day and National Markets Day on June 23.
The figures are from Springboard, the retail insights specialist that tracks footfall in over 350 UK town and city locations.
National Armed Forces Day is this weekend but Rotherham hosted their own celebration and recognition event on June 23.
The day aims to raise public awareness of the contribution of the armed forces and to allow the country to show their support.
Rotherham has signed up to the Armed Forces Community Covenant, which aims to help service people leaving the Armed Forces to integrate into civilian life.
Stalls and family entertainment were in place in All Saints' Square with a parade through town in the morning.
National Markets Day was one of the recommendations made by retail consultant, Mary Portas in her review of the nation's High Streets and is part of the government backed "Love Your Local Market" campaign.
In Rotherham town centre, the home of Britain's best street market, stalls were offered to new traders and entrepreneurs for just £10.
Robin Lambert, manager of Rotherham Markets, said: "Our National Markets Day celebrations started last Saturday and are due to continue throughout the week until Friday, with new casual traders invited to take advantage of the £10 per day stall offering.
"This initiative has already proved to be a success, with the heightened promotional activity and increased variety on offer driving footfall up 13.3% compared to the previous Saturday.
"Despite the bad weather visitors from all over the South Yorkshire region took advantage of the enhanced offering, with many staying on in town to visit the high street shops too.
"Rotherham hosts regular markets and we frequently change the focus of what's on offer in order to keep people interested and eager to come back to the town again and again."
The town centre was also a focal point of the Olympic Torch relay passing through Rotherham on June 26. An estimated 30,000 people lined the streets as the torch made its way through the borough.
