News: Demolition for former gentleman's club

By

Planning permission has been granted to demolish the former Bohemia gentleman's club on the edge of Rotherham town centre.

The premises on Main Street went up for sale last year with a guide price of £150,000. Agents, Christie + Co, stated that over eight offers were received from a range of buyers including investors, developers, retailers and pub operators.

The buyers were The PDR Group, a successful company specialising in electrical engineering who are based in nearby Central Business Park.

The new owners have now secured planning permission to demolish the former Traveller's Rest pub which was built in the 1940s.

Records show a pub in the site dating back to 1849. It was restyled and opened as a gentlemen's club called the Blue Minx and was subsequently taken over and renamed the Bohemia Club.

Due to the deterioration of the building and the failure of the businesses which previously occupied the site, a demolition and new build plan has been prepared.

A spokesperson for Taylor Tuxford, who put the plans together, said: "Following initial investigations it is considered that the conversion and re-use of the existing building fabric would not be financially viable and so a new build solution is being explored."

The building will be demolished and the existing site boundary brick walls will be retained until such time as the site is redeveloped. The whole 1,000 sq m site will be levelled and hard-landscaped.

The PDR Group also purchased the former Phoenix Hotel in Rotherham town centre before carrying out similar demolition plans. The site opposite the redeveloped train station recently opened as a temporary car park.
