By

World-renowned engineers, Rolls-Royce, is investing in Rotherham to support future growth.

The Derby business posted impressive half yearly results this week showing that profits before tax were £687m for the first half of 2012, a 7% increase on the same period last year.

Underlying revenues increased by 5% to £5.76bn as results came in ahead of forecasts. The group reported strong order books and growth in civil aerospace, defence aerospace and energy.

In a statement, the group said that in addition to the good results: "We continue to invest in technology, infrastructure and people. These investments will enable us to meet our customer commitments and improve efficiency."

During the period, Rolls-Royce begun the construction of a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Rotherham.

The 14,900 sq m Advanced Blade Casting Facility on the Advanced Manufacturing Park will use cutting edge manufacturing techniques to produce single crystal turbine blades, which play a critical role in jet engines and must withstand incredibly harsh conditions.

Construction work is expected to extend over a 12 month period and the facility will be capable of manufacturing 100,000 blades per year when fully operational in 2014.

John Rishton, chief executive of Rolls-Royce, said: "Rolls-Royce has delivered solid growth in underlying revenue and underlying profit in the first half of the year.

“We continue to invest to support future growth, including our new production facility in Singapore, a new turbine blade casting plant in the UK [in Rotherham], a new stator facility in the USA and a new assembly plant for our Energy business in Brazil."
