News: Lindsay scores with Titans contract

By

A Rotherham sports injury treatment and rehabilitation specialist who launched her new business this February is celebrating being appointed as sports rehabilitator for Rotherham Titans Rugby Union Football Club for the 2012/13 season.

Lindsay Whitaker worked for Plymouth Albion Rugby Club before being made redundant due to financial problems at the club, having previously worked with Rotherham Titans, Doncaster Knights and Sale Sharks rugby clubs, the National Ballet and the Great Britain Women's Basketball Team during qualifying for the 2012 Olympics.

On returning to Rotherham she used £500 from UK Steel Enterprise's Kickstart Fund to open a clinic at Thomas Rotherham College and to buy essential stock.

UK Steel Enterprise is a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Steel. Its Kickstart Fund provides grants of up to £500 to help young entrepreneurs planning to start a new business to purchase essential equipment and or services that can get them trading. Its main investment fund provides business finance in amounts from £25,000 up to £750,000 to companies in South Yorkshire and other areas affected by changes in the steel industry.

Lindsay said: "Without the Kickstart Fund I would not have been able to buy the essential stock I needed to be able to treat people. I needed specialist tapes etc that can really help speed up recovery.

"I'm now very busy treating people at my clinic and the forthcoming season with the Titans should be really exciting. If anyone is thinking of setting up their own business I'd say be prepared to get your head down and work hard, make sure you get the right support around you and if you do the rewards can be great."

UK Steel Enterprise has set aside finance from its Kickstart Fund to target 30 young people in Rotherham with small scale finance that can make all the difference when starting a new business. It can be used to pay for essential equipment or materials to people looking to launch a new business or those that are in the early stages of trading.

Keith Williams, regional manager for UK Steel Enterprise, said: "We are looking for more young people like Lindsay. We know that they don't tend to have access to finance or have much in the way of savings when thinking about starting a business, so our £500 can make all the difference.

"It may pay for new IT equipment or essential materials but so often it can provide the boost needed to get the aspiring entrepreneur on the way to success."
