News: Rotherham Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2012

The search is on for Rotherham's best young entrepreneurs.

Rotherham Youth Enterprise (RYE), in association with UK Steel Enterprise, is running the awards for the seventh year running with the aim of celebrating an promoting the best businesses run by young people in the borough.

Categories are best new start up, best established business, business most determined to succeed and most innovative business. Plus the overall winner will be named as Rotherham's Young Entrepreneur of the Year.

Open to entrepreneurs aged between 18 and 30, winners and runners up in each category will each receive a cash prize and publicity for their business.

Darren McDool, business coach for Rotherham Youth Enterprise, said: "From ice sculpture, fashion, dance or engineering, IT and graphic design, the awards have highlighted the hidden skill base of some smart young individuals.

"And awards are excellent accolades for business - providing independent recognition and a boost to confidence and morale."

The closing date for entries is September 7.

Rotherham Youth Enterprise provides self-employment support and advice for young adults in the area. Office and workshop provision is also available across the borough.

Some of the current crop of new businesses supported by RYE gathered for an event recently to showcase the progress of their start up companies.

Businesses included organic clothing retailers, KyNa Boutique; exercise machine hire firm, Havahire; Hip Rocker Ltd (a supplier of specialist chairs for children), Rotherham town centre's Bittersweet boutique; Matrix Framing at Dinnington; internet advertising specialist, Spotamo; Pizzatainment (education through food workshops); Impelling Web Design; and chocolatier, Cocoa Chic.

For some the event provided the first opportunity to speak to people that they had not met about their business and for others it was an opportunity to discuss new initiatives and plans for the future.
