News: Prospec acquired by French firm

By

Prospec, the Rotherham-based manufacturer of lockers, cubicles and associated products has become part of the French-based Abeo Group.

The headquarters, fabrication and warehouse area are all housed in a modern 2,175 sq m facility on the Canklow Meadows Estate where Prospec currently employs 78 people. It is a market leading company in the provision of changing cubicles, lockers and bench seating systems to the leisure industry in the UK, Europe and US.

Abeo is a group of companies that lead the European market in sports and leisure equipment for public institutions, local authorities and the private sector. It has its headquarters in Rioz and enjoys a turnover of €78m.

The existing board members of Prospec, Bob Mitchell, Managing Director and Mark Spicer, Operations Director will be joined by David Pringle as Sales Director. They will also be joined on the board by Olivier Esteves CEO of Abeo, plus Jerome Bourquard and Brice Chavel.

Jon Pearson, Chairman and Director, one of the founders of Prospec, and Sales Director, Ron Frisby both retired from the business at the end of 2012.

With origins going back over 100 years, Prospec Limited was established in 1977 and in 1985 it was subject to a buyout by the management team.

The origins can be traced back to Ellis Pearson Limited, a Sheffield specialist in glass. Glass products still feature widely in Prospec's range including glass walls for squash courts with over 40,000 supplied worldwide.

Products developed all fall under the distinctive "Marathon" brand, which is a reflection of Prospec's investment in R&D. This investment has allowed the company to develop compact laminate systems, that are designed to withstand the day to day rigours of local authority swimming pools and sports centres.

The vast experience of working with glass has allowed the company to compete in the prestigious Health & Fitness industry, with the Cabrillant systems leading the ceramic painted offer for cubicles and lockers.

Design is at the heart of Prospec and further plans are in place to exploit the experience of working with glass in developing products for alternative sectors of the UK market.
