News: Get Inmotion! with an electric vehicle

By

South Yorkshire businesses are being given the chance to join a ground-breaking initiative that is making electric vehicles more affordable for business use.

As part of a Government initiative to lower vehicle pollution by 28% before 2020, the Inmotion! project is encouraging the uptake and use of electrically charged vehicles. Funding from the Government's Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF), has been matched with local contributions to create a pot of £72m to support a range of schemes which bring environmental, health and economic benefits.

80 businesses could benefit from a grant of up to £10,500 for the flexible lease of a Plug-in van or £7,500 for a Plug-in car for up to 48 months, plus an additional grant of £500 towards the cost of installing a workplace charging point. Companies making the switch to Plug-in electric vehicles can also benefit from low running costs (approx. £2 for 80 miles), no road tax and a reduction in exhaust emissions to help create healthier and cleaner roads in our region.

Sheffield United's Community Foundation was the first company to sign up to the scheme. Patrick Piearcey, community development officer at the foundation said: "We are delighted to be the first organisation in South Yorkshire to receive an electric vehicle as part of the Inmotion! Electric Vehicles programme. The Foundation has a minimum of three teams out delivering in Sheffield on a daily basis and all of the travel between sites is within city’s urban areas and undertaken in private vehicles.

"The electric vehicle will help reduce the Foundation’s carbon footprint and also fuel costs. This will help the Foundation to contribute to improving the air quality in the communities we work in, whilst allowing us to re-invest fuel related savings into community programmes. We consider this a win/win situation and are pleased to be part of a programme designed to improve the environment within Sheffield.

"Our ambition is to have a full fleet of electric vehicles that will enable us to dramatically reduce our carbon footprint as part of a sustainable transport strategy."

Inmotion! together with project partners npower and Venson Automotive Solutions Ltd are inviting South Yorkshire businesses to come along and find out about the electric vehicle scheme as well as experience the latest Plug-in electric vehicles at showcase events next week. On Wednesday October 8 between 10am and 2pm at Doncaster Rovers' Keepmoat Stadium or Thursday October 9 at 10am - 2pm on the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham.
