News: Rotherham MP vows to fight for MTL staff

By

Sarah Champion, Member of Parliament for Rotherham, has vowed to fight for the workers and their families affected by manufacturing specialist MTL Group Limited going into administration.

One of Europe's fastest growing project manufacturing specialists in the metal sector, MTL appointed John Sumpton and Hunter Kelly of EY's Restructuring team as joint administrators earlier this week after encountering difficulties on a large overseas defence contract.

A total of 157 employees were made redundant at the Brinsworth site and 146 employees have been retained to assist with ongoing operations whilst a purchaser is sought.

Sarah said: "I was very sorry to hear to the news of so many potential job losses in my constituency. I know the devastating impact this will have, not just on those who could been made redundant, but also their families.

"Rotherham currently has the 35th highest level of unemployment in the country and this has to be addressed. I plan to contact to Vince Cable, Minister for Business, Skills and Innovation to see what can be done to help MTL Group Limited and their staff.

"I will do everything in my power to fight for those hard-working families who will now be worrying about their future, and I hope an appropriate solution can be found. I also believe we can go some way to securing the future of MTL Group Limited, a company which has been an important part of Rotherham's economy for many years."

A global exporter of secondary steelwork, MTL works with a global blue-chip customer base in the defence, construction equipment, rail and off-shore wind energy sectors. Its expertise lead to it securing three significant contracts for armoured hulls, supplying a leading manufacturer of armoured vehicles that is globally renowned for producing some of the most advanced vehicles in the defence sector.
