News: Yorkshire Building Society set for Rotherham

By

Signs are that a branch of the rebranded Yorkshire Building Society is set to open in Rotherham town centre.

The group announced a rebrand at the start of the year that would mean the closure of the Rotherham branch of the Barnsley Building Society on Effingham Street.

Yorkshire Building Society Group announced planned changes to two of its high street brands that will see Barnsley Building Society and Chelsea Building Society branches rebranded Yorkshire Building Society. Barnsley Building Society joined Yorkshire Building Society in 2008.

The group said that the plans are part of a significant investment programme to modernise the group's high street presence, improve its digital service and offer members greater flexibility and choice in where they do business.

With the Rotherham branch of Barnsley Building Society set to close, leaving no branch being maintained and in the area, the Group said that it was actively pursuing opportunities to open a Yorkshire Building Society agency with local businesses.

Now it looks like a deal has been struck to take on premises at the head office of Barton's Estate Agents on Moorgate Street in Rotherham town centre.

A planning application has been submitted for new signage showing that the building would contain a local agency of the Yorkshire Building Society.

Dating back to 1864 and now the UK's second largest building society, the group achieved a record core operating profit of £185m for the 2015 financial year.
