Rotherham United FC appoint former boss Steve Evans

By

Rotherham United have announced the reappointment of Stevenage boss, Steve Evans, as their manager. This decision comes after the dismissal of Leam Richardson. The Millers parted ways with Richardson following their relegation to League One. For Rotherham locals with a penchant for watching football, this is undoubtedly huge news.

Evans is no stranger to Rotherham United. His successful first stint at the club will always be remembered in Rotherham for the back-to-back promotions from League Two to the Championship Evans delivered between 2012 and 2014. He then managed to keep the club in the Championship for another season before leaving in October 2015.

The Scot and his assistant Paul Raynor have now signed three-year deals with Rotherham United.

Rotherham United chairman Tony Stewart said:"In Steve and Paul, we have two individuals that understand the Rotherham United DNA and know what it takes to build a successful team."

The decision to dismiss Evans' predecessor Leam Richardson was not taken lightly by Rotherham United but was deemed necessary after extensive discussions at the board level. It was unanimously agreed that a change of direction would give them a better chance of bouncing back into Championship football next season.

Richardson's tenure saw him win just two out of twenty-four games in charge, leading to The Millers' relegation which was confirmed by a home defeat against Plymouth on April 5th.

To return to Rotherham, Evans has had to leave Stevenage FC, where he enjoyed an impressive run over two years in which he took the club from the brink of relegation from the EFL to promotion to League One last season.

The Scot followed that up with an impressive second season in charge at Stevenage, taking the newly promoted side close to a place in the League One playoffs. For this, he was nominated for League One Manager of the Year but understandably lost out to John Mousinho, manager of champions-elect Portsmouth.

It is understandable then that Stevenage will be sad to see Evans go, and Rotherham fans will likely be equally excited to see him compete in League One with their side next season.

Stevenage chairman Phil Wallace acknowledged that while they didn't want him to leave, they respected his decision and wouldn't stand in his way if he wanted to leave.

Rotherham United fans will be hoping that Evans' return can bring about a change of fortune for their team as they prepare for their penultimate home game of the season against Birmingham City on Saturday, with relegation long since confirmed.
