News: Opening date for new Rotherham Poundland

By

Poundland has confirmed the opening date for its relocated store in Rotherham - it will be the discount retailer's largest store in Yorkshire.

Rothbiz reported in January that Poundland was set to take on the former Marks & Spencer unit at Parkgate.

The new store opens on Friday March 31.

Spanning a whopping 18,500 sq ft - over three times the size (6,000sq ft) of a normal Poundland – the store will create ten new jobs with 29 colleagues transferring from its smaller store on the same retail park which closes on Thursday.

In addition to the amazing value customers expect in categories such as food and drink, home and pet, entertainment and stationery, there’ll be more choice than ever before - from new greetings card ranges to the most extensive range of toys carried in any Poundland.

The super-sized store will be bright and airy with a modern and contemporary feel designed to give customers maximum convenience from extra wide aisles to make navigating the store easier, to trolleys and easy-to-use supermarket-style belted checkouts.

Around a third of the store will be dedicated to Pep clothing and home, offering the widest possible range of womenswear, menswear and kidswear from the UK’s fastest growing clothing brand.

Poundland has become one of the UK’s top 20 clothing retailers, in under seven years and the Rotherham destination store will have changing rooms for customers’ convenience.

The Pep Home department will include the latest 2023 ranges, including new kitchen storage options, bathroom accessories and soft furnishings.

Pep Home’s range of faux plants has always been popular, but for those who want to try their hand at the real thing, there will be a selection of house plants to enhance the home.

Rotherham Parkgate will join the growing number of stores to offer chilled and frozen food and it will be one of around 300 stores across the country getting fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as a selection of beers, wines and spirits.

The whole store will have a modern, contemporary feel from the use of lightboxes, digital signage and mannequins to the clean vistas across the store as replacement stock is kept in the warehouse, not on high shelves across the shop floor.

It will offer a range of small domestic appliances and customers will be able to choose from a broad selection of small domestic appliances from Russell Hobbs, such as toasters, kettles and irons.

The wider than usual range of health and beauty products will include Poundland’s own Make Up Gallery, #6 skincare and brands such as Rimmel and Essence.

Poundland director of retail, Darren Kay, said: “We love being in Rotherham, in fact we’ve been here for over ten years and we know how much locals love their Poundland. That’s why we wanted to open an even bigger and better store – our largest in Yorkshire.

“The size of the store means there’s more of our amazing value under one roof across more categories than ever before. Where we’ve opened stores of this scale in other areas, they have wowed customers and we’re thrilled that Rotherham will be one of the first locations in the UK to have one of our large ‘destination’ stores bringing shoppers from across Yorkshire.

"What’s more customers won’t have to travel far as we are on the same retail park. We really can’t wait to open the doors on Friday.”

News: Poundland's Rotherham expansion confirmed

By

Poundland has confirmed that it is relocating to a larger unit in Rotherham as it announces a major expansion for 2023 where the bargain retailer is set to open and relocate 50 stores, creating up to 800 jobs.

Rothbiz reported last month that Poundland was set to take on the former Marks & Spencer unit at Parkgate to create one of the brand's largest stores.

The 32,185 sq ft unit is under offer with Poundland applying for planning permission for signage and for a licence to sell alcohol.

A recent move has seen Poundland open new "supersize" stores, often out of town, which offer a selection of everyday essentials such as groceries, drinks and snacks that shoppers love, as well as revamped health and beauty, entertainment, stationery and craft ranges, so customers can do more of their shopping in one trip.

There are also wider ranges of chilled and frozen food and PEP&CO clothing and homewares, with the larger stores providing the choice and shopping experience customers would expect from the big grocers.

Barry Williams, said: “We know how customers appreciate the effort we’ve made in the last few years to transform our offer, offering them more of what they want to buy, week-in, week-out.

“That transformation means we have to step up our search for the best locations to bring the best of Poundland to customers across the UK and that’s precisely what we’ll do in 2023.

“We will continue to work hard to find the right locations that suit the range of Poundland formats we now offer – from small neighbourhood convenience stores to our large destination stores.”

In February and March, Poundland will will relocate stores in Newport, Llantrisant and Rotherham. The move across the popular retail park would see Poundland double increase its space from its current 9,900 sq ft unit to use 16,726 sq ft og the new unit.

A spokesperson for commercial property agents, ESH, said: "ESH are proud to have helped deliver a flurry of deals on Parkgate Shopping, Rotherham for our client Tim Cornford @ Ellandi in the last few weeks, welcoming new names over the coming months including Frasers/Flannels, Wren Kitchens, Popeyes and a relocated, upsized Poundland. This along with lease regears completed with TK Maxx, Superdrug, Matalan and Wilko."

News: Parkgate 100% let

By

Parkgate Shopping, the popular Rotherham retail destination, is 100% let but the closure of the large Kiddicare store has left a large whole in the portfolio of leading stores.

Owned by Hercules Unit Trust(HUT), which is advised by British Land and managed by Schroders, Parkgate Shopping is one of the largest retail parks in the UK, home to over 40 shops and attracting around seven million visitors a year. It is valued at over £100m to the trust via a subsidiary, the Rotherham Unit Trust.

As Rothbiz reported first, discount retailer, Poundland, has opened a 9,900 sq ft unit and Wilkinson, the value general merchandise retailer, recently took over the 20,000 sq ft, former Comet store.

British Land has now revealed that both retailers have taken ten year leases. Smith Young and Cushman & Wakefield acted for HUT.

Matthew Reed, senior asset manager for British Land, said: "We are delighted that Parkgate Shopping is now fully let, demonstrating the scheme's appeal to a broad range of occupiers. The addition of Wilko and Poundland enhances the attraction of the park, delivers more brands to our shoppers, and helps drive footfall."

The recent lettings follow on from Nike Factory Store and fashion retailers, USC & Blue Inc opening new stores.

In contrast, one of the largest units on the park, the 45,000 sq ft store occupied by Kiddicare, the retailer of baby products, recently closed. The award-winning online retailer was acquired by Morrisons in 2011 for £70m and was the first step in developing the Morrisons online business. However, the business was sold earlier this year for £2m to Endless LLP, a leading investor in non-core acquisitions, who promptly closed all but the original store.

Morrisons retains the leases in the former Best Buy stores and recently said that it is currently working to dispose of ten store leases.

The small Phones4u store also closed as the retailer entered administration this month.

Future plans at Parkgate, which is coming under threat from new out of town developments at nearby Great Eastern Way and at Cortonwood, include a new 4,000 sq ft Nando's restaurant to replace the current Pizza Hut.

The retailer has taken the combined former Roseby's and Evans units on Howard Street as part of ambitious expansion plans to open 50 new stores in the UK in the next financial year 2010/2011, creating more than 2,000 jobs.

Poundland has seen a huge demand for its extensive range of general merchandise together with around 1,000 branded products including Walkers, Cadbury, Tetley, Colgate, Kodak, Vanish and Johnson & Johnson. The business achieved excellent results for the year ending March 2009 and reported strong Christmas trading results thanks to the ever-growing selection of amazing value general merchandise, branded product, exciting seasonal ranges and special deals, all at the £1 price point that consumers love.
