News: MTL secures multi-million pound export order

By

Rotherham manufacturing specialist, MTL Group, has secured a significant export order for fabricated and painted armoured vehicle hulls.

MTL Group is one of Europe's fastest growing project manufacturing specialists in the metal sector and is a global exporter of secondary steelwork. It works with a global blue-chip customer base in the defence, construction equipment, rail and off-shore wind energy sectors.

MTL said that it would be supplying a leading manufacturer of armoured vehicles that is globally renowned for producing some of the most advanced vehicles in the defence sector.

The Brinsworth firm stocks and processes around 30,000 tonnes of material annually, including in excess of 10,000 tonnes of quenched and tempered steels. It is one of the largest stockists and suppliers of armour plate in Europe and also specialises in blast floors and ballistic armour.

This is the third significant contract for armoured hulls secured recently and the company hope that more enquiries will come to fruition in the coming months.

Simon Hurst, sales manager for defence at MTL Group, said: "This is a significant multi-million pound export order and MTL was selected as a partner due to its state of the art facility, equipment and hull manufacturing experience. Quality and a competitive offering with the benefit of our Design for Manufacture service gave the customer an enhanced value proposition."

The Design for Manufacture service is a specialist added value engineering service for the defence sector where a dedicated team come together at the design stages, reviewing the customers design and look at alternative processing methods to reduce weight, cost and increase the protection levels.

Hurst added: "We are seeing an increasing trend where many of our customers do not want to employ a large workforce but can simply turn to us when they need to and walk away when they don't."

Since the move in 2011 to a new £5m facility in Rotherham, where it employs over 350 staff, MTL almost doubled its export sales to £7.3m.

MTL uses state of the art equipment at their 300,000 sq ft modern manufacturing facility, including the world's largest robot press and robot welding to ensure consistent quality and volume achievement.

Hurst added: "MTL Group's recent investment also includes a large format robot welding cell specifically designed for producing armoured hulls. This new equipment enables not only cost savings but also volume production but most importantly improved quality."

One recent project saw an armoured vehicle manufacturer's 8x8 vehicle floor completely redesigned from an original 11 piece fabrication to a one piece pressed component. Developments have also been made on forming thick armoured grade aluminium into "V" shaped sections for blast protection applications.
