News: Steelers sign up for YES! Project in Rotherham

By

Developer Oak Holdings have announced that the Steelers ice hockey club have signed a 25 year lease to become tenants of a planned purpose-built 5,000-seater twin-pad ice rink at the YES! Project at Rother Valley Country Park. The Steelers will be an anchor tenant which will help the profile and drive new business to the centre, which has received outline planning permission for the "biggest undercover leisure and entertainment destination" in Europe. Last month the heads of terms for the development agreement were approved by Rotherham Council's cabinet. Steelers General Manager, Mike O'Conner said: "Operating our own 5000 seat arena with twin training pad will be hugely beneficial for us, we are pointing the way to the future for UK Ice Hockey. Not only will we have our own home on a long term basis we will have the ability to create and run our own junior development programme ensuring local youngsters fill our roster in the future." Rotherham Council leader Cllr Roger Stone said: “We see the Steelers deal as a win-win all round – for the club and its fans, for the sport, and for Sheffield, Rotherham and the rest of South Yorkshire.” The Steelers are set to move to Rotherham in 2011.
