News: City region at the forefront of UK manufacturing

By

The importance of the manufacturing sector to the economy of the Sheffield city region is highlighted in a report by Sheffield Council and the Engineers Employers' Federation. Sheffield's manufacturing industry has about 1,600 businesses employing around 30,000 people. The latest research indicates that the big job losses have now declined primarily due to the expansion of small and medium sized firms working in growing markets such as the medical and aerospace industries. Against a fall in employment of 25%, economic output has risen by 12%. The report highlights the changes to the industry, moving into higher value markets and utilising a wider range of skills and technology. Rotherham based AESSEAL and Bromley Performance Sports are highlighted in the report for the way in which they are taking advantage of the new conditions. About 130 business, council and other leaders are expected to attend today's launch of the report at the Advanced Manufacturing Park at Waverley in Rotherham which is regarded as a template for economic development and collaboration through the partnership between Sheffield University and Boeing.
