
The cabinet of Rotherham Council has approved Rotherham's financial contribution to the Digital Region project. The super-fast “next generation” fibre broadband network will be the first in Britain and serve 1.3 million homes across Sheffield, Doncaster, Barnsley and Rotherham, as well as 40,000 small businesses. The cabinet heard details on the revised funding package, the proposed share of revenues, the proposed roll out approach and the key next steps required to meet the timescales set out in the project plan. With speeds up to 50mbps, the network could boost economic development and improve access to broadband. Digital Region will be funded by public money, partly from the European Union, and private investment. Last year telecommunications company, Thales, were chosen as the preferred bidder to manage the network.

It would be really useful to have some kind of rollout plan in terms of infrastructure delivery etc...
