News: Upskilling the region's workforce

By

The Yorkshire Post report on the issue of skills in the region, with Minister for Yorkshire, Rosie Winterton, stating that it was one of her top priorities. Ms Winterton is putting together a team of "business ambassadors" – elite businessmen and women who will take a lead in ensuring employers have the skilled workforce they need, now and in the future. She told the paper: "As regional minister this is an extremely high priority for me – it's absolutely vital for the future competitiveness of the region. "In a global economy we have to show we are world leaders in having a workforce which is highly skilled. We must not just stop educating people when they enter the workforce. "When people are looking at where they might invest they do look at what kind of commitment there is to ensure the workforce are skilled." The minister will be working closely with the Regional Skills Partnership which brings agencies and partners together under the themes of employability, skills and business support. The paper also states that the minister has written to each local authority asking it to sign up to the Skills Pledge, a public commitment to investing in training.
