News: Local solutions to the credit crunch in Rotherham

By

Rotherham is set to deliver key regeneration schemes and continue to support enterprise and start-up activity through the credit crunch. A recent event in Rotherham took place in order to find out the impact of the current economic crisis in the area and see what can be done to help. The round table event took place at Magna and was jointly chaired by Wentworth MP John Healey, Minister for Local Government, and Rotherham Borough Councillor Mahroof Hussain MBE. RiDO, the regeneration arm of the council, were on hand to outline the issues facing Rotherham's businesses and outline the actions being taken to address them. The impact seen in Rotherham included a number of recent redundancy announcements, the global financial issues affecting investment, the reappraisal of regeneration schemes, the changes to the empty-building rates liability and the various impacts on the housing market. RiDO outlined the actions taking place to address these issues. Including:
- Assess risks but continue to deliver long-term strategies and key regeneration schemes
- Continue to promote enterprise and start-up activity - new incubation centres at Fusion @ Magna and Matrix @ Dinnington
- Play a key role in helping businesses identify and access the business support available
- Provide positive promotion and marketing of the borough, local business and the offer to new investors
- Work with partners to deliver a co-ordinated "taskforce" response to disinvestment and closures
