News: Rotherham Chamber backs Waverley community project

By

Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce has supported proposals by property and energy company UK COAL to redevelop the former open cast site in Waverley, the region's largest ever brownfield development. Proposals, which were presented to the Chamber and Rotherham Investment and Development Office (RIDO), the council's regeneration arm, would transform the former coke works and mining site near Catcliffe in South Yorkshire - which covers an area bigger than Sheffield city centre - into a high quality residential and employment site. John Lewis, Chief Executive at Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber, said: "The developers have asked the Chamber for, and will receive our continuing support for a very ambitious and transformational scheme. "The overall programme at Waverley could take up to 25 years to complete. However, due to the continued commitment to the borough, the Chamber will continue to stay fully engaged with all parties involved the scheme. "There are further questions on funding, timeframes for development, the necessity for an adequate transport infrastructure, including public and private. "There is also the need to continue the dialogue with our members over supply chain opportunities, use of local labour, commitments to Rotherham, its community and the Chamber of Commerce." Karl Battersby, the authority's Strategic Director of Environment and Development Services, added: "The application is believed to be the largest, in scope, ever submitted to Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council. "It's certainly one of the most significant we've ever received, but it has to go through the same rigorous planning process as any submission." Sue Anderson, Harworth Estates' Director, said: "If planning is successful, the area will be a unique, sustainable development on a historic, fully restored former mine site, which will benefit thousands of local people in terms of providing new affordable housing, employment opportunities, schools and leisure facilities." Sue added, "It is extremely positive and encouraging that we have Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber's support and that both organisations feel that the application is significant for South Yorkshire."
