News: Who Dares Wins! Deadline looms for Barnsley & Rotherham Business Awards

By

It takes grit, determination and drive to run a successful business, and with the entry deadline looming, Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce has announced that SAS veteran and best-selling author Colin MacLachlan will host the special evening of celebration.

No stranger to handling high pressure situations, having swapped the battlefield for the boardroom, Colin is perhaps best known as being one of the first instructors to participate in the hit Channel 4 TV show SAS: Who Dares Wins as well as the Channel 5 series Secrets of the SAS, will oversee proceedings at the highly coveted awards ceremony, which celebrates the achievements of the local business community when it returns to Magna in Rotherham on November 14.

A respected military veteran and SundayTimes best selling author, Colin served for 18 years with the Royal Scots and the SAS. He was one of the youngest soldiers in a generation to pass the gruelling SAS selection process, and during his career, Colin was involved in a series of high profile and daring missions.

He is one of a handful of men who has handled hostage negotiations, hostage rescue and been a hostage himself. Since retiring from the special forces, Colin has provided high-level security, where he supported the Saudi royal family, amongst others, as well as successfully launching his own security business.

With 14 different awards up for grabs, including the highly coveted title of Business of the Year, the Barnsley & Rotherham Business Awards showcase and celebrate the achievements of the local business community over the past 12 months. The awards are free to enter and open to all businesses with the “S” postcode, as well as members of Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber.

Businesses celebrating milestone anniversaries in 2025 are also invited to apply for a highly coveted “Salute to Business” in recognition of their longstanding contributions to the local economy.

However, any business wishing to take part is urged to act quickly as the deadline for entries is Friday September 12 at 4pm.

Colin MacLachlan said: "I'm looking forward to taking part in the Barnsley & Rotherham Business Awards.

"My career in the SAS taught me the importance of teamwork, collaboration and the ability to succeed in challenging and high-pressure situations and those skills are equally important when it comes to running a small business. I'd like to wish everyone who is entering this year's awards every success with their entry and meeting you all on what promises to be a night to remember.

Matt Travis, President, Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber, added: “The Barnsley & Rotherham Business Awards is one of the highlights of the Chamber’s calendar year. It’s a unique opportunity for businesses from across South Yorkshire to come together to make new contacts, as well as celebrate and showcase their achievements during the past year, and I would encourage businesses from across the region to get involved.

"As any business owner will tell you, running a business often means working under pressure, teamwork, drive and a sheer will to succeed – many of the qualities that are the key to the success of the special forces. I’m looking forward to welcoming Colin on the evening, and I’m in no doubt that he will make this year’s awards ceremony a night to remember.”

Matthew joins the Chamber from Whyy? Change, a long-standing Gold member of Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber, where he progressed from Marketing Intern to Head of Communications. His time there gave him valuable insight into the Chamber network, regularly attending events, contributing news and updates via the Chamber website, and actively engaging with the wider business community.

This first-hand experience has shaped his understanding of what Chamber members truly value, clear communication, relevant support, and opportunities to raise their profile. It also means he’s well-placed to enhance the Chamber’s marketing and communications strategy in a way that feels meaningful and accessible to local businesses.

With experience from both sides of the Chamber, as a member and now Marketing Manager at the Chamber, Matthew brings a well-rounded, practical perspective that will help ensure communications resonate with the Chamber’s 1,100 members and reflect the needs of the local business community across South Yorkshire.

In 2023, Matthew was named South Yorkshire’s Technology & Digital Apprentice of the Year, recognising his outstanding contributions in his role digital sector. He holds a Level 6 Diploma in Professional Marketing and a Level 6 Marketing Manager Apprenticeship from the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), where he also volunteers as the Vice Chair of Education for CIM Yorkshire supporting future marketing professionals and working with Universities.

Speaking about his appointment, Matthew Trueman (pictured, left) said: “Having worked for a Chamber member myself, I’ve seen first-hand how important the Chamber is and the benefits and opportunities the Chamber creates for local businesses. I’m excited to now be on the other side, working directly with members to make their voices heard, share their news stories, and ensure they feel connected to a supportive business community. I’m looking forward to helping more businesses access the full value of their membership.”

Shane Young, Operations Director at Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber (pictured, right), added: “We are delighted to welcome Matthew to the team. His marketing experience and understanding of the Chamber’s role from a member’s perspective brings real depth to this position. Matthew’s appointment is part of our commitment to strengthening communications, building stronger relationships, and ensuring members are fully informed and engaged with all the Chamber has to offer.”

News: South Yorkshire business leaders urge Home Secretary to support international students

By

South Yorkshire business leaders are urging the government to consider the critical role that international students play in the growth and success of UK businesses when developing the forthcoming Immigration White Paper.

Representatives from business groups across the region published an open letter to Home Secretary Yvette Cooper highlighting the importance of international students to economic prosperity in South Yorkshire, warning that any measures that restrict international students who can come to the UK would harm local businesses and regional regeneration.

The letter – signed by the Sheffield, Barnsley and Rotherham and Doncaster Chambers of Commerce, the Federation of Small Businesses, Confederation of British Industry (Yorkshire & Humber), the Company of Cutlers’ in Hallamshire, the South Yorkshire Institute of Directors and Made in Sheffield – urges the government not to make any changes to international student immigration policy that would have a detrimental impact on businesses in UK towns and cities.

Business leaders outlined their support for the continuation of the Graduate visa route – a visa which allows international students to stay in the UK for two years after graduation, or three years for those with a PhD. This is a key part of UK universities’ offer to prospective international students and enables businesses to benefit from this talent.

Carrie Sudbury, Chief Executive of Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce, said: “Upon graduating, international students continue to contribute to the region by working with and for us. The Graduate visa route is an important part of maintaining UK higher education’s competitiveness and can also be a means by which international students use their talent to help grow our businesses domestically and internationally. And, on top of that, they act as advocates for the region when returning home.

“We recognise the long-lasting impact that international students’ soft power has on South Yorkshire.”

The letter follows the publication of a statement by leaders across South Yorkshire, including MPs and the South Yorkshire Mayor, showing their support for international students and the positive impact they have on communities in the region.

The University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University are home to more than 11,000 international students from more than 150 countries.

Sheffield Central is the second highest parliamentary constituency for net economic impact in the UK, with the contribution of international students from both universities reaching £521m, meaning the area was financially better off by £5,800 per person, on average, because of international students.

News: Business community comes together to champion social value in Rotherham

By

An event highlighting social value in Rotherham inspired community collaboration at Wentworth Woodhouse.

More than 100 people from South Yorkshire businesses came together as Esh Construction delivered a networking event to lead the conversation on meaningful social value delivery in Rotherham.

Esh’s Social Value Manager for Yorkshire, Megan Roberts, was joined by Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive Carrie Sudbury to host the event at Wentworth Woodhouse, which enabled conversations to go past the discussion of social value, with representatives from the South Yorkshire Careers Hub, Rotherham Hospice, Skills Street and the Work-wise Foundation, among others, coming together to celebrate successes and focus on ‘doing the doing.’

Megan opened the conversation by discussing Esh’s Constructing Local strategy which has been built around six key E’s – economy, education, engagement, employment, even greener and employees. Alongside, guest speakers Carole Foster, Fundraising Manager at Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust and Simon Hartley, Skills Consultant for RNN Group UK shared aligned values throughout the morning.

Megan said: “It was incredible heading down to the main networking area to see all our exhibitors in deep conversation and many of our visitors gaining new contacts. I am so grateful to our key speakers and exhibitors for getting involved and making the event a success.”

In Rotherham alone, Esh Construction has delivered £2.1m worth of social value return on investment across its schemes since 2023. With community engagement being built across employment, education and the third sector, Chamber Chief Executive Carrie acknowledged there are always opportunities for more businesses to capitalise. She said: “The Chamber would encourage all businesses – any shape or size – to always collaborate and have those conversations. Events like today are so important to the borough, its people, the voluntary sectors, to service providers, to retail and to hospitality – the golden thread, through all of this is collaboration and conversation.

“Esh have done an incredible job already for the local region. And Megan has done a wonderful job in her role, not just today but on a long-term basis and she shared some incredible stories through the event.”

Working as a Skills Consultant at RNN Group, which supports 10,000 students across five colleges at any one time, Simon Hartley urged businesses to up their game on social value, explaining that it takes a two-way street for a real impact to be made. He said: “At RNN our aim is to get students into the industries they want to work in so it’s about matching the employee with the right class to get that support.

“Events like today not only raise awareness of the great things happening in Rotherham and South Yorkshire but they showcase how businesses can benefit too. Social value isn’t just about charities doing something to help learners, it can also aid businesses – it’s a two-way street.”

The historic setting for the networking session wasn’t lost on the 100+ businesses present, but it was sobering to hear from fundraising manager at Wentworth Woodhouse Carole Foster, who highlighted that hosting the community event would help the charity attract further business support.

She said: “Bringing different organisations and businesses together is vital, especially for a charity like ours. We are just at the beginning of our journey – to create a thriving community hub and restore a heritage site for future generations. While visitors see a grand building, they often don’t realise that three-quarters of it, hidden from view, is still in urgent need of restoration.

“What stood out from the event is the strong desire to collaborate, which is something I truly love about Rotherham. Having worked in the town for many years across various charities and community organisations, I’ve seen firsthand how people come together to support one another—and that’s what makes this community special.”

A key message of togetherness and collaboration resounded through the Grade I listed country house on the outskirts of Rotherham, from the outset, with a heartfelt round of applause paying homage to Dame Julie Kenny, who passed away earlier this week after a short illness – Dame Julie played a key role in charity SAVE Britain’s Heritage buying and restoring Wentworth Woodhouse and has been a prominent community champion across Yorkshire.

Attendees were invited to sign up for Esh’s first Constructing Careers programme in the region, through which businesses can offer interviews for candidates to help provide positive destinations.

News: Sweatworking gets Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber hot under the collar

By

Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber has proved business networking doesn’t have to be a dull affair by bringing an innovative high-octane concept to South Yorkshire for the first time.

First pioneered in the US, sweatworking replaces the traditional networking format of coffee and awkward small talk with a chance to make new connections, set goals and break through barriers, all whilst keeping fit.

The inaugural event took place at Rotherham’s Everlast Gym, with over 20 participants choosing to swap their suits for spinning classes, resulting in a unique shared experience and a networking event like no other.

Following an intensive workout, designed to suit budding athletes of all abilities, visitors were rewarded for their efforts with a fresh smoothie and the opportunity to continue conversations, proving that breaking into a sweat can sometimes be the ultimate icebreaker.

Shane Young, Operations Director, Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber, said: “For many, the prospect of walking into a room full of strangers with a hand full of business cards can be a daunting one. Our sweatworking event illustrated that business success and physical wellbeing can often go hand in hand. Whether it’s turning up the heat in a spin class or working towards a business goal, both require planning, commitment and sometimes a willingness to challenge our comfort zones.

"The energy and enthusiasm on the day was incredible, and I hope that we’ve illustrated that networking is built upon forging real connections, and that is often driven through the experiences we share. Judging by the incredible response we received from this event, I’m sure that sweatworking won’t be a one off in the Chamber events calendar.”

Sweatworking is the first of a number of events planned by Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber throughout 2025, helping businesses from across South Yorkshire to connect, collaborate and engage with others across the region, with events open to members and non-members.

Later this month, the chamber is hosting a Construction Meet the Buyer Expo on February 12 at the Holiday Inn Rotherham. With various stands representing a range of local organisations, the event will enable visitors to meet buyers in the construction industry to develop business opportunities and support construction growth in the region.

News: Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber welcomes new president

By

Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber has appointed experienced business owner Matt Travis as its new president.

Travis took over the helm of the member-led organisation from outgoing president Matthew Stephens at Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber’s recent annual general meeting, which was held at the Barnsley Civic.

With a background in planning and environmental consultancy, Matt co-founded environmental and planning consultancy Enzygo in 2008. Under Matt’s leadership, Enzygo has grown from a company employing three people to a 80-strong workforce, which operates from offices in Sheffield, Belfast, Bristol, Cambridge, Cardiff and Manchester. Today, the specialist environmental planning consultancy helps a diverse range of businesses operating in the housing, energy and transport sectors.

During the AGM, Matt outlined the vision for presidency by announcing a commitment to ensure that the voices of South Yorkshire businesses are heard within Government, a pledge to help SMEs harness new opportunities presented through net zero, as well as reaffirming the Chamber’s commitment to its buy local agenda.

The event also saw business consultant and founder of IEKOS, Hayley Koseoglu appointed as vice president, and Mark Smith join Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber’s senior leadership team as deputy vice president.

Over the past 12 months, Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber has gone from strength to strength, welcoming 118 new members into the organisation, as well as successfully delivering 147 training courses and hosting a diverse range of networking events: from its popular annual Chamber Means Business Expo to the Chamber’s glittering awards ceremony.

The Chamber has also successfully launched a dedicated property forum, bringing together representatives from construction, property and public sector organisations to unlock the planning system. The Chamber has also been working collaboratively with Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council and the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority to encourage key public sector organisations to buy local. As a direct result of this work, more than £70m has been reinvested back into the local economy.

Matt Travis, President, Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber, said: “Chambers of commerce hold a truly unique place in the communities they serve and we should be proud of our achievements over the past 12 months. However, we cannot afford to rest on our laurels, and with many businesses in the region facing uncertain futures, Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber will continue to do everything in its power to create an environment where businesses of all sizes can unlock their full potential.

"The budget was a difficult one for many businesses, and one of my top priorities will be to work closely with South Yorkshire’s members of parliament to ensure their concerns are heard. I feel particularly proud of the steps the Chamber has made towards building stronger local supply chains, and as a direct result of this work, more than £70m has been retained within the local economy over the past year alone.

"I first joined Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber shortly after launching my own business. During that time, the support we have received from other chamber members, the dedicated staff working tirelessly behind the scenes, as well as the opportunities to collaborate with others has been instrumental in the growth and development of Enzygo. In my new role as president, I am looking forward to working alongside our 1100 strong membership and helping to create an environment where businesses of all sizes across South Yorkshire can truly prosper.”

Matthew Stephens, Immediate Past President, said “Looking back over the past two years, I think we can be incredibly proud of our achievements. News: Sky’s the Limit for Barnsley & Rotherham’s Business of the Year

By

It proved to be a night to remember for South Yorkshire’s business community which came together to celebrate their achievements and reflect on the success they have enjoyed over the past 12 months at the Barnsley and Rotherham Business Awards.

During a glittering evening at the Magna Science Adventure Centre, the Barnsley and Rotherham Business Awards, sponsored by Barnsley College celebrated the achievements of all elements of South Yorkshire’s business community: from apprentices and new business owners taking the first steps in their chosen vocation, to organisations that have gone above and beyond the call of duty to deliver truly outstanding work in the fields of growth, people development, customer service, sustainability and community impact.

Hosted by TV presenter Amy Garcia, the event saw over 540 guests from across South Yorkshire’s business community come together to celebrate their achievements over the past 12 months. However, the night belonged to Parkgate-based Sky High Tree & Ground Maintenance Services Ltd, which was chosen by judges to be a worthy winner of the highly coveted title of Business of the Year.

Since founding the business with little more than a pair of hedge trimmers and a dream of working outdoors in 2014, founder Luke Hammill has seen his company grow into a successful multi-million-pound venture, which employs 30 full-time members of staff. Today, the company successfully works on behalf of housebuilders, local authorities and some of Britain’s largest construction companies, where the company is responsible for developing community green spaces throughout the UK.

Under Luke’s leadership, Sky High Tree & Ground Maintenance Services Ltd has enjoyed significant year on year growth, with turnover rising from £1 million to £3 million within the past 12 months alone. As a direct result, the company has invested significantly in new plant machinery, staff training as well as investing back into the communities they serve by working closely with armed forces charities to help veterans forge new careers upon returning to civilian life.

Cateegory winners on the saw three other Rotherham-based companies receive accolades, with education recruitment specialists Trust Education being named as Start-Up of the Year, Equans securing the People Development Award and the Manvers-based Mace Group being crowned best large business.

Barnsley-based winners saw Wombwell-based Cranswick Convenience Foods secured the Community Impact Award in recognition of its commitment to supporting a wide range of good causes in Barnsley and across South Yorkshire, whilst Barnsley College’s innovative Carbon Literacy Project, as well as work undertaken to reduce carbon emissions across its sites, was rewarded with the Sustainability Award.

Barnsley FC Community Trust secured the title of Charity of the Year in recognition of its transformative work in the field of education, health, social inclusion and sports participation. The trust, along with highly commended charities Weston Park Cancer Charity and Age UK Rotherham all received cash prizes to support their work in South Yorkshire.

Longstanding businesses Electrical Safety UK, Barnsley Hospice and Brearley & Co Accountants were presented with salutes to business in recognition of their 20, 30, and 40-year service respectively, whilst Barnsley-based JC Snell and White’s Bakery both celebrated their 90th anniversaries in 2024 – a combined total of more than 270 years’ service to South Yorkshire’s business community.

The important contributions made by charitable organisations were also recognised on the night, with Barnsley FC Community Trust securing the title of Charity of the Year, in recognition of its transformative work in the field of education, health, social inclusion and sports participation. The trust, along with highly commended charities Weston Park Cancer Charity and Age UK Rotherham all received cash prizes to support their work.

Individual awards presented saw Leo Lewin (Affinity 2020 CiC) awarded the title of Apprentice of the Year, whilst Alicia Hewitt (Secure Power Limited) was crowned as Businessperson of the Year. A Special President’s Award was also given to Chris MacCormac, Chief Executive of the Morthyng Group, in recognition of their transformative work within the education sector.

In a heartfelt tribute which looked back at his 30 year career, Chris was honoured for his nearly 30 years of leadership and dedication towards education and community support. Chris started his career a youth worker in 1980, before going to transform Morthyng into a leading national training provider, which has helped thousands from disadvantaged backgrounds. He retires after a distinguished career and was celebrated for his lasting impact on the local community.

Luke Hammill, Managing Director, Sky High Ground Maintenance, said: “It has been an incredible year for our business. Winning the title of Business of the Year, securing the Growth Award as well as being highly commended in the Businessperson of the Year category is something that I feel incredibly proud to have achieved.

"When I set up the business ten years ago, never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that the company would grow and scale in the way it has done, and I feel very honoured that our efforts have been recognised in this way by the judges. I left school with no formal qualifications at all, and I hope the success I’ve enjoyed since starting my own business goes to show that with the right work ethic and determination, anything is possible.

"Having the right people to support you is key. I’d like to give a massive thank you to each and every person of my Sky High team, especially my partner Danielle who has been with me on every step of this amazing journey.

"Businesses play a vital role in shaping the local and regional economy. From the outset, I’ve always wanted my business to be a force for good: we undertake a wide range of community projects, from supporting local schools to breaking down barriers towards employment by giving veterans a chance to rebuild their lives after leaving the armed forces.

"Of course, we’ve got no intention of resting on our laurels. One of the reasons we joined Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber was because of the work it undertakes to create opportunities for its members within local supply chains. We’re hoping to work more closely with the Chamber in the years to come to bring these plans to fruition, which in turn will not just create more opportunities for our business but grow the local and regional economy.”

Mattthew Stephens, President, Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber, added: “Over the past 12 months there has been some incredible work delivered by businesses of all sizes across South Yorkshire. I would like to congratulate each and every business who supported this year’s event. The standard of entries was exceptional, and every organisation that was shortlisted, highly commended and winners on the night should feel incredibly proud of their achievements.

"Collectively, members of Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber employ more than 70,000 people across South Yorkshire. The success of events like our business awards helps to showcase and celebrate the achievements of our incredibly diverse business community – from start-ups taking the very first steps on their business journey to longstanding businesses, which have collectively devoted 270 years of service to our local communities, and despite many businesses preparing themselves for challenging times, at least in the short term, the Chamber will continue to offer support, advice and campaign on behalf of South Yorkshire businesses to ensure their voices are heard.”

News: South Yorkshire manufacturing specialist joins industry elite

By

A Rotherham-based entrepreneur has been named as one of the most inspiring business leaders currently working in the manufacturing sector.

Adam Bradley was named as one of the top 100 most influential people by industry publication The Manufacturer during a special event that took place at the Birmingham NEC.

Chosen by a judging panel comprising academics, senior business leaders and established industry bodies, The Manufacturer's Top 100 list was launched in 2013 in response to academic studies and parliamentary reports that identified a lack of visible role models within the manufacturing sector.

Adam secured his place on the list after overseeing a significant period of growth at Corrosion Resistant Materials. Since becoming a director of the business in 2020, Adam has successfully seen the company enjoy significant year-on-year growth, which has seen the business export its products to 38 countries across the world, where it supplies goods and services to the advanced technology, energy and food and drink sectors.

Based in Swinton, Corrosion Resistant Materials secured a Queen's Award for Enterprise in 2022, and since that time both Adam and the company he oversees has secured a number of prestigious industry accolades. In the same year, Adam was awarded Business Person of the year by Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber and since that time, both Adam and Corrosion Resistant Materials have been presented with a number of prestigious industry awards including Business of the Year and the coveted Made In Sheffield award for Exporting.

In addition to his day-to-day responsibilities, Adam is a regular speaker to schools across the region, where he speaks about the career opportunities within the manufacturing sector. In recent years, Adam has played a key role in the development of the South Yorkshire-based Island Networking group, created to forge stronger links across the region's SME sector. He is also currently vice chair of the British Stainless Steel Association and a board member of the British Valve and Actuator Association.

Adam Bradley, Director, Corrosion Resistant Materials, said: "The Manufacturer's Top 100 list is a prestigious industry accolade, which is often referred to as the Who's Who guide of British manufacturing, and I feel incredibly honoured that the work I have delivered has been recognised in this way.

"The manufacturing sector plays a vital role in Britain's economy, yet for the sector to truly prosper, we must inspire and educate the next generation about the many different career opportunities available. We all have a part to play in realising this, and I feel truly humbled that my efforts have been recognised in this way."

Joe Bush, Editor, The Manufacturer, added: "Over the last decade, those who have been inducted into The Manufacturer's Top 100 have used their experience to highlight the amazing opportunities that exist for the next generation of UK manufacturers. To be part of it means each person has been nominated, and judged, to be an outstanding role model for the young people we all want to encourage into careers in our sector.

"All 100 are catalysts for change. They will continue to strive for innovation, champion the latest technologies and pioneer new business models. They will pivot and plunge forward as the markets and competition around them evolve. They are the driving force behind the country's manufacturing renaissance, and to understand their journeys is to understand why it is truly exciting to be manufacturing in Britain today."

Corrosion Resistant Materials was founded by Chris Williams and Lee Perry in 2015 after spotting a niche in the supply of specialist materials to industry. The company provides a comprehensive range of services including heat treatment, machining, testing and forging.

Today, Corrosion Resistant Materials successfully exports more than 70 different grades of specialist materials to 38 countries across the world and since securing the Queen's Award for Enterprise, the company has continued to enjoy significant year-on-year growth.

News: Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber launches new property forum

By

Property professionals from across South Yorkshire are set to receive a helping hand from Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber.

Following feedback from its membership, the Chamber has launched a new dedicated property forum, aimed at forging stronger links between local authority planning departments and South Yorkshire’s business community.

The new forum aims to create opportunities for businesses to collaborate and discuss issues facing the sector, as well as working more closely with local authorities across the region in a bid to overcome current bottlenecks within the planning system.

According to the Chamber, an estimated 5,000 new homes are needed to meet South Yorkshire’s current housing needs. However, with many schemes facing lengthy delays when it comes to receiving planning permission, Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber believes that the delays not only impact the property sector but also stifle regional economic growth.

The new property forum was launched at a special event that took place at Rotherham United's New York Stadium and saw more than 50 senior property professionals participate. During the event, delegates were given the chance to hear from Colin Blackburn, assistant director of housing infrastructure and planning, SYMCA, who provided an update about the region’s future development plans, as well as highlighting the opportunities to improve connections between local communities as a result of plans to return buses to public ownership.

James Pitt, managing director of Muse, provided an update on Rotherham’s Forge Island development, which is expected to open to the public later this summer, whilst Joanne Neville, head of planning at the Harworth Group, discussed some of the challenges and opportunities associated with some of the schemes the company was currently working on.

Matthew Stephens, President, Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber, said: “South Yorkshire is lagging behind many areas of the UK when it comes to meeting the local housing need. Planning, by its very nature, is a complex area, and to bring any planned development to fruition rightly requires scrutiny. Yet at the same time, local authority planning departments are facing significant challenges of their own, not least being expected to achieve more with increasingly limited resources. The inevitable result is delays in permissions being granted, which in turn doesn’t just affect the property sector but the regional economy as a whole.

"The chamber property forum will meet regularly and provide a platform to create greater collaboration between businesses working in the property sector. This will be achieved by forging stronger links with local planning departments to identify and overcome common problems being faced across the sector as a whole.”

News: Action! Rotherham Real Ale and Music Festival 2024

By

Preparations behind the scenes are well underway for the 2024 production of the Rotherham Real Ale and Music Festival.

Starting at Oakwood School in 1992, the event has gone on to become the largest indoor beer festival outside of London.

Usually attracting over 5,000 people to the Magna Science and Adventure Centre in Rotherham, proceeds from the festival are used to support the work of local charities. In recent years, the Rotherham Cancer Care Centre.

This year's event, which organisers have warned could be the last, is taking place Thursday the 7th of March, from 6PM to 11PM, Friday the 8th of March, from 6PM to 11PM and Saturday the 9th of March, from Noon to 11 PM.

The theme this year is film to celebrate the return of cinema in Rotherham and organisers are calling the festival the "Director’s Cut."

The star attraction will be the 150+ beers, ciders, wines and gins but a live cinema experience and live Six Nations rugby on the big screen are also planned.

The soundtrack this year includes an open mic event on the Thursday, with Friday welcoming Funky Business, Kiziah and the Kings and The G Men. Saturday's lineup includes The Leathernecks, The Leptons, Lightning Threads, Bone Broke Kings, Sam Scherdel and Daniel Horsham.

For the very first time, the Rotherham Real Ale & Music festival has teamed up with Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber to offer a unique and unmissable afternoon of networking and beer tasting. The preview to the main feature takes place between 4PM and 6PM on Thursday 7th March.

It has also been confirmed that the temporary roadworks currently being undertaken on Sheffield Road between the Ickles Roundabout and Bessemer Roundabout will be suspended for the festival with The X1 and X10 bus service enabling visitors travelling to and from the festival to alight at the pedestrian entrance to Magna, accessible via Sheffield Road.

For visitors planning to attend the festival via car, taxi, or minibus, Magna can be accessed via its usual routes. Free parking is available at Magna during the event, and drivers can receive free non-alcoholic drinks from the festival bars throughout the duration of event.

Steve Burns, organiser, Rotherham Real Ale & Music Festival said: “We’re expecting to welcome thousands of beer lovers from across the region, to our three day event, and we’ve been working closely with Rotherham Council and First South Yorkshire over the past few weeks to ensure that everyone visiting the festival can do so safely and with minimal disruption to their journeys.

"I’d like thank both Rotherham Council and First South Yorkshire for listening to our concerns, and also for helping us to achieve a practical solution, ensuring that visitors can access one of the largest events which takes place in the borough with minimal disruption.

"The agreement we have reached will mean that Sheffield Road will remain open during the evenings our festival will be open to the public. There have been a number of rumours circulating online that access to the festival will be limited, I want to refute these by going on record and say that both the roads will remain open around Magna, and that the venue will be accessible via public transport.

"I hope the steps they have undertaken will help to encourage visitors to come along and enjoy this year’s Rotherham Real Ale and Music Festival.”

A spokesperson for First Bus in South Yorkshire said: “We have bus services running to the event over the three days, giving people the opportunity to leave their car at home and sample a tipple or two whilst enjoying the entertainment. A link to the X1 and X10 timetables can be found here - Timetables | First Bus , we hope the weather holds out everyone has a great time.”

Rotherham Council’s Leader Cllr. Chris Read said: “We are delighted that the Council is able to support this year’s event, as well as making it easier for people to get to the venue by car, foot or bike (sensibly of course!) We’re even more delighted that this year’s festival will have a film theme to celebrate the return of cinema in Rotherham for the first time in more than 30 years as we look forward to the opening of our new Forge Island in the Summer.”

Tickets for the Rotherham Real Ale and Music Festival are priced £12 and can be purchased in advance from selected pubs and also via the festival website: https://www.magnabeerfestival.uk

News: Rotherham businesses celebrate success

By

Three Rotherham businesses have walked away with top business accolades, as the Barnsley and Rotherham Business Awards returned to Magna Science Adventure Centre.

Over 550 representatives took part in the glittering event, which took place at Magna and was hosted by BBC Look North presenter Amy Garcia and featured entertainment provided by Barnsley-based composer Catherine Rannus and Britain’s Got Talent finalist Kyle Tomlinson.

The winners on the night saw Enhanced Skin Health secure the title of Excellence in Customer Service, IT Desk (UK) were presented with the Commitment to People Development Award and the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust secured the Business Community Impact Award.

Sponsored by the RNN Group, Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber’s glittering Celebration of Business event showcased the extraordinary efforts made by businesses and individuals – from apprentices taking the first steps in their respective careers to businesses going above and beyond the call of duty when it comes to staff development, business growth, sustainability, customer service and much more.

A total of ten Rotherham-based businesses were highly commended during the evening including the YWCA in the charity of the year category, who walked away with a cash prize to support its vital work. The overall title of Business of the Year was presented to Warwick Ward Machinery, which has established itself as one of Europe’s largest suppliers of new and used earthmoving and waste recycling equipment and employs more than 100 people across four sites in the UK.

This year also saw the very first President’s Salute to Business presented. The special accolade, which recognised the important contribution made by individuals and organisations, was presented to the NHS in recognition of its 75 years of service to the people of Barnsley and Rotherham. A special accolade was also awarded to Chamber past president Joada Allen in recognition of her efforts in supporting Barnsley & Rotherham’s business community during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as marking 10 years in business.

The awards also recognised the longstanding contributions of several businesses including Davies Turner & Co, which celebrated its 150th anniversary, and H E Barnes, which marked its centenary.

Matthew Stephens, President, of Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber, said: “This evening was more than a celebration; it was a showcase of the resilience, innovation and collaborative spirit that defines the thriving business landscape of Barnsley and Rotherham. This year, to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the founding of the NHS, I felt it was fitting for the business community to recognise the dedication and service provided by our healthcare workers. It is the first time that we have presented a President’s Salute, and I felt it was important for the Chamber to recognise the invaluable work delivered by both the Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust.

"We received a high number of entries; the judges were faced with a difficult task, and I would like to congratulate every business that was highly commended and made the shortlist. You should all be very proud of your efforts. The Chamber Business Awards is one of the most important events in the Chamber calendar, and it helps to illustrate not only the strength and diversity of South Yorkshire’s local economy but also how many businesses across the region are going above and beyond the call duty when it comes to building a stronger regional economy.”

News: Chamber means business shines a spotlight on the strength of the Barnsley and Rotherham business community

By

Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce recently celebrated the resounding success of the 2023 Chamber Means Business Expo. The South Yorkshire business expo, held at the AESSEAL New York Stadium in Rotherham, played host to an impressive gathering of over 400 delegates with over 65 exhibiting local businesses showing their products and services at a variety of stands.

The event which took place on Thursday last week (21st September 2023), was a demonstration of the opportunities available in the region and shone a spotlight on the leading businesses which operate in the Barnsley, Rotherham and wider South Yorkshire region.

The sold-out exhibition served as a platform for Chamber members and the local business community to come together and make valuable business connections. It was an event that resonated with a cross-section of industries and business professionals, demonstrating the value of collaboration and innovation within the South Yorkshire region.

This year, the event was made possible through the sponsorship of KCM Waste Management and KAT Communications, once again cementing Chamber Means Business as a fixture on the local business calendar. It is a testament to the ever-evolving business landscape of South Yorkshire that this event continues to go from strength to strength, increasing in the number of delegates and exhibitors year on year.

Carrie Sudbury, Chief Executive of Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber, said on the success of the event: “Chamber Means Business Expo 2023 marked an extraordinary milestone for this event which we launched in 2012. With over 400 enthusiastic delegates and more than 65 local businesses, this event was a real showcase for our region with a record number of delegates in attendance.

“The Chamber’s event calendar plays a pivotal role in delivering the work we do as Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce. As we move into autumn, we’re excited to welcome more businesses to our ever-growing events calendar, including our monthly networking events, the newly launched Manufacturing Supply Chain Expo and the upcoming South Yorkshire International Trade Conference 2023 – not to be missed. These gatherings are invaluable opportunities for forging connections within our membership community.

“Finally, I invite you to join us in celebrating our region’s best businesses by securing your ticket to our upcoming Business Awards. Further information on all our events can be found on the Chamber website.”

Chamber Means Business gives businesses the opportunity to talk to other businesses, build relationships and trade services and support. In 2012, Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber hosted its first Chamber Means Business Exhibition, one in Barnsley and one in Rotherham. Following the success of the events the two were merged to create an even bigger exhibition for the region. The event brings together hundreds of people to network, share ideas and do business together.
