News: Rotherham Renaissance – students’ plans are the business!

By

Students had a taste of what it’s like in the world of business – and the winning team turned their business plan for Rotherham town centre’s Renaissance scheme into a tidy profit. Rotherham Youth Enterprise ran the project for business students, from colleges and sixth forms across the borough, to come up with plans for a retail business to be based in the new All Saints’ Quarter – the £37m scheme that will include residential, retail, leisure and office accommodation by the River Don. Judges included business teams within Rotherham Borough Council, Chamber of Commerce and some of the young people running businesses supported by Rotherham Youth Enterprise. The winners – students from Rotherham College of Arts & Technology, Laura Bullock, Adeel Akram, Hanna Bullock, Jade Thomson, Tamsin Bedford, have just received prize money totalling £600. Their vision could now be turned into reality. Their winning plan will also be submitted to the council’s business development team – part of its regeneration arm, Rotherham Investment & Development Office – to see if it can be put into practice to attract further businesses to the scheme as the developments near completion. Business adviser for the council’s youth enterprise team Darren McDool said: "The standard of the plans submitted was extremely high, demonstrating that Rotherham has some young, keen business minds. Today was about rewarding the best plan, but also demonstrating to some key organisations in the borough that these students are their workforce for the very near future."
