Luxury brand, Burberry have announced that are set to close their Rotherham factory in their third quarter trading update. "In the UK, of Burberry’s two apparel manufacturing facilities, production and investment will be focused in Castleford, Yorkshire, where the iconic trench coats are made. Subject to consultation, the sewing facility in Rotherham will be closed and supporting operations scaled back, which could result in up to 290 redundancies." Revenue rose 9% to £329m for the three months to December 31 but like-for-like sales fell by 3% despite heavy discounting. The redundancies are part of a "cost efficiency programme to deliver about £50m savings" which will also see Burberry's under performing Spanish operations close. The Rotherham factory at Mushroom roundabout was saved last year as the company closed down its factory in Treochy, South Wales, at the cost of 300 jobs, as production was moved to China.
