News: First residents move in to the Imperial Buildings in Rotherham

By

Following 18 months of restoration work on Rotherham’s much-loved Imperial Buildings, 2009 sees it come to life with new residents moving into two of the 19 new luxury apartments. The town centre’s ambitious £2bn Renaissance, part of Yorkshire Forward’s region-wide Renaissance Towns programme, set out in its Town Team goals the determination to populate the town centre – and Imperial is the first completed project to achieve this. The Edwardian, Grade II listed building at the top of the High Street has had extensive repairs and improvements made, as well as the introduction of living space above the ground-floor retail units. Bucking the trend of the current economic climate, the apartments have almost all been sold, and are now starting to be let. Mark Jarvis is the first to move into Imperial Buildings and was able to spend Christmas in his new two-bedroom apartment. "I chose Imperial Buildings as I wanted to live in Rotherham’s town centre so I was close to work and the local amenities,” he said. "When I viewed Imperial I was impressed by the quality and how central it was to the town centre. I am very excited about the changes occurring in this area and look forward to meeting my neighbours not only in this building, but in the apartments opposite in The Old Market development." Council leader Cllr Roger Stone, chairman of the Rotherham Renaissance Town Team, said: "It’s great to see these developments getting finished now. It is important in the Renaissance programme not only to concentrate on the new, but also to protect what we have."
