News: Europe Minister visits Rotherham Central Railway Station
Europe Minister and local MP for Don Valley, Caroline Flint, visited Rotherham last week to view proposals for the £7.5m redevelopment of the Central Railway Station. The investment required to deliver improvements of this scale and quality is pulled together from a range of sources, including European funding, Yorkshire Forward, South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive and Network Rail. The visit to Rotherham town centre was made as part of a wider tour of South Yorkshire visiting regeneration projects in both Sheffield and Doncaster. Caroline Flint said: "I'm really impressed with the plans for the upgrade. And as Minister for Europe I'm delighted that EU funding has helped to provide this real boost for Rotherham town centre. This is not just a facelift, but a means to attract more jobs and opportunities for the people of Rotherham." The council's Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Development, Cllr Gerald Smith, said: "The redevelopment of the Central Railway Station acts as another important step forward in the regeneration process. "The innovative design for the station has the potential to be a landmark, a symbol of the Renaissance ambitions, as well as serving a function and making Rotherham better connected." SYPTE's Head of Transport Integration, David Young, said: "Once Rotherham Station is rebuilt the journey for travellers will be much more attractive and pleasant and it should encourage even more people to make the switch from cars to public transport. "It will also mean that all the main stations in the four South Yorkshire districts will have benefited from upgrades in the past few years."
