News: Government approval for Maltby Academy

By

The Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families, Ed Balls announced in Parliament this week that approval has been granted for the creation of Maltby Academy in Rotherham. Five new academies were approved which brings the total number of academy projects approved since the DCSF was created to 101. Rotherham based education technology specialists, u-xplore have outlined their proposals to become the lead sponsor of Maltby Academy. The academy is due to operate from September this year, with new facilities built to create an iconic 0-19 campus to be completed by September 2013. Andy Pickles, CEO of u-xplore: "We’ve been working closely with the council for five years to develop innovative approaches to support teaching and learning, with a particular focus on connecting young people with employers via the use of technology. This resulted in u-xplore achieving the national Microsoft award for Innovation Through Technology, a royal visit and an Ofsted review which described u-xplore’s work with Rotherham schools as "outstanding". "Having the opportunity to build on this, by working at the heart of a school with staff and students at Maltby to create a learning environment fit for the 21st century, is incredibly exciting and will in turn have an impact on all Rotherham schools."
