News: Tidy Boys pledge to Keep It Tidy

By

Hard dance pioneers, The Tidy Boys have finally acquired the Tidy brand from the Rotherham-based Music Factory Entertainment Group.

Andy Pickles (pictured, left) and Amadeus Mozart (pictured, right) were the original founders of the Tidy Trax label in 1995, using it as an outlet for their studio work, and over the years developed Tidy into a great hard house brand. It saw the duo form the Tidy Boys and embark on a DJ tour with performances at dance events across the world including Global Gathering, Creamfields, Gatecrasher, Planet Love, Escape In The Park, Colours Fest and many more.

The brand also established massive Tidy Weekender events and staged legendary events at Magna in Rotherham.

In 2006, the pair left Tidy and the Music Factory to pursue new challenges and move away from the dance industry. Pickles focused on U-Explore, the providers of innovative innovative software which engages with young people through cutting edge media and later became lead sponsor of Maltby Academy in Rotherham. Mozart went on to set up his own graphics design company.

In late 2012 the boys launched IDEAL, a new music and entertainment brand, and just over a year later, and after much discussion, speculation and negotiations, they have secured the Tidy brand. It comes after a number of attempts over the years.

The boys said in a statement: "Seen by many as the World's greatest Hard House brand, Tidy over the last few years has slowly slipped into hibernation, something that has happened due to natural causes and business circumstance. However as the people that gave birth to this loveable label, we realised that the brand that means so much to so many, had to come back.

"Tidy is more than just a label, it was and still is a way of life for so many, a passionate community who want to see it rise to its former glory and once again take centre stage within club land."

The plan is for the two brands, Tidy and IDEAL, to sit alongside each other, enabling the duo to provide a range of products to fans, from new music to classic tracks, and from big events to smaller, more random ones.

Based at Parkgate, The Music Factory Entertainment Group is a unique music and media company which began life in a terraced house in 1983 when chairman, John Pickles (Andy's dad), established a production facility and began licencing music around the world. Now occupying the whole street, it runs brands such as Mastermix, which provides specialist CDs to DJs, and Pure Energy, which supplies music specifically tailored for the fitness professional.

One of the Music Factory's biggest successes was Jive Bunny, which took the pop music world by storm in 1989 and secured three consecutive Number 1's and over 15 million record sales to date.

News: New Business and Enterprise centre at Maltby Academy

By

Staff and students are moving into the new Business and Enterprise centre at Maltby Academy in Rotherham.

The centre is one of two new buildings as part of a £10.9m construction programme undertaken by BAM Construction that also includes refreshing, remodelling and refurbishing other parts of the academy's estate.

At the heart of the new campus, the "academy ready for business" will offer a variety of corporate, open plan and cellular business centre-style spaces and bring together learning centres, classrooms, IT suites and seminar and conference areas.

David Sutton, principal at Maltby Academy, said: "It is particularly pleasing to see the vision become a reality.

"On seeing the new spaces for the first time, students have commented on how the central staircase and feature wall in reception were just as they visualized from the photographs. Everyone entering the new building is "wowed" by the impressive and modern looking spaces."

Rotherham-based education technology specialists, U-Explore is the lead sponsor of Maltby Academy, which is home to 1,200 students. Enterprising learning is central to the ethos of the academy, enabling students to be "qualified" to confidently enter the world of work with not only the necessary qualifications to succeed, but also an understanding of how to apply themselves in work and life.

Sutton added: "At Maltby Academy we are determined to address the employment gap by equipping our young people with the skills, attitudes and behaviours that will make them "work ready" in the future.

"Our curriculum provides a relevance and context to the specialist learning in key stages 4 and 5 and links with business and employers at appropriate points. In some curriculum areas the learning is enriched by a work experience placement or a visit to a particular employment sector. Every year the likes of Shell, BP, Tata Steel and Brinsworth Engineering support the Rotherham Science/Technology days held across the borough. This promotes learning in science, technology, engineering and maths subjects in the town and secondary students from across all Rotherham schools participate in a range of events aimed at promoting interest in STEM subjects.

"For each of the companies involved this is a good chance to engage with schools and to show the potential career opportunities available. Personally, I feel that business has a responsibility to do this. If companies have a much more informed group of young people coming through the recruitment process they stand to benefit."

Maltby Academy and Academy Sixth Form are hosting "An Evening with Employers" on Monday October 21, 6.00pm - 7.00pm. The "work inspiration" evening brings together local employers, Higher Education providers, with current and past students from the Health and Social Care, Sport, IT, Hair, Beauty and Construction sectors to talk about the range of local job opportunities that are available and routes into the profession.

News: Entrepreneurs on board at U-Explore

By

Rotherham education specialist, U-Explore, has welcomed its new owners as it continues with its ambition of becoming the leading guidance services option for schools.

U-Explore specialises in enabling schools to deliver reality based careers information, advice and guidance. Its U-Explore national school product is an innovative software solution which engages with young people through cutting edge media.

Entrepreneur Matthew Riley, of the business communications specialist, Daisy Group, purchased the company out of administration in June with two partners, Steve Smith and David McGlennon, who both become non-executive directors.

Begbies Traynor was appointed as administrators after U-Explore began experiencing difficulties when the Government changed the statutory duty for career guidance from local authorities to individual schools, with funding withdrawn in September 2012.

Founder of the company, Andy Pickles will stay on as CEO. He said: "The acquisition comes at a fantastic time for U-Explore to enable us to grow the company and deliver a comprehensive service for schools and colleges with the combination of an excellent online system and our expertise in sourcing fantastic guidance professionals tailored to an individual school's needs.

"To achieve our ambition of becoming the leading guidance services option for schools, there could be no better time to have the level of expertise we now have around our board table."

Riley (pictured), who has taken on the role of chairman of U-Explore, was the winner of the Ernst & Young UK Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2007, and named the inaugural winner of the Entrepreneur Challenge, securing a £5m interest-free loan from Bank of Scotland and mentoring from Sir Philip Green in the same year.

He said: "When entering a new market, it is imperative that you are able to ascertain the need. In the UK, young people are too often leaving school unprepared for the wealth of opportunities that lie ahead of them, and as the CEO of a business that employs over 1400 people nationwide, I am passionate about ensuring that businesses support education to improve the employability and awareness of our future workforce.

"We are looking forward to establishing U-Explore as the leader in this space and together tackling the challenges faced by young people in progressing from education to employment."

News: U-Explore out of administration

By

Rotherham education specialist, U-Explore, has been bought out of administration in a pre-pack deal.

U-Explore specialises in enabling schools to deliver reality based careers information, advice and guidance. Their U-Explore national school product is an innovative software solution which engages with young people through cutting edge media.

The platform has been cited by Ofsted as outstanding and has 275,000 users throughout the country.

The company founder and CEO, Andy Pickles, is also the lead sponsor of Maltby Academy in Rotherham.

Begbies Traynor was appointed as administrators in June after the company began experiencing difficulties when the Government changed the statutory duty for career guidance from local authorities to individual schools, with funding withdrawn in September 2012.

A report by the administrators showed that U-Xplore Ltd's administration was brought by Santander who withdrew their banking facilities with the firm having an unpaid £141,000 debt to HMRC and eventually had unsecured creditors of £415,000.

Founder of the company and director, Andy Pickles, had been trying to find investment and buyers for the now loss-making company but was not helped by a dispute with fellow director, Allan Livesey.

Only one potential investor came forward, the MBL Group, who offered £125,000, a figure far short of the £2m they paid for just a 15% share in 2010, but negotiations fell away.

In May, the company vacated its Templeborough offices and employees were sent home. The company had defaulted on several contracts.

However, in June the company was saved in a pre-pack deal, with a newly-created company, U-Explore Limited, acquiring the intellectual property and contracts for £43,000.

The new company has directors of Matthew Reilly and Stephen Smith of the business communications specialist, Daisy Group, and Andy Pickles is to continue his involvement in the management of the new company.

Andy began his career at 16 in the music industry, where he started out as a sound engineer and progressed to become a successful music producer, DJ, record company boss and even 80s pop star with three number ones to his name as part of Jive Bunny and the Mastermixers. He developed the software business through Investors in Education, part of The Music Factory Entertainment Group and U-Xplore was established as a separate firm in 2008.

In 2009, the now called U-Explore moved into new offices at Templeborough, had doubled their workforce and grew their network three fold.

News: U-Explore in record start

By

Rotherham education specialist, U-Explore, has had a record start to the school year with the total amount of time that young people across England have spent using its careers and employability platform since September 2012 equating to more than six years' worth of work-related learning.

Based in Templeborough, U-Explore specialises in enabling schools to deliver reality based careers information, advice and guidance. Their U-Explore national school product is an innovative software solution which engages with young people through cutting edge media.

A recent government report has examined the effects of the statutory duty for careers guidance that came into effect in September 2012 and saw the responsibility for young people's careers guidance transferred from local authorities to schools.

The report from the Education Select Committee warns that careers services for young people in England show a "worrying deterioration" and that "urgent steps are needed to improve matters".

The MPs said: "Too many schools lack the skills, incentives or capacity to fulfil the duty put upon them without a number of changes being made. Young people deserve better than the service they are likely to receive under the current arrangements. Schools cannot simply be left to get on with it."

Ahead of the introduction of the new statutory duty, U-Explore's national careers platform was rebuilt from the ground up, with the involvement of teachers and students. Key features include more than 2,000 written and video job profiles, an online action plan, intuitive CV builder and links to educational establishments throughout the UK.

Andy Pickles, chief executive of U-Explore, which is also lead sponsor of Maltby Academy in Rotherham, said: "I believe the government was right to make changes to how careers guidance was being delivered last year as it was patchy and inconsistent, and if their objective was to cause disruption and debate, then it is a job well done if it now helps to shape the right approach.

"Schools and colleges should be able to decide what is right for their students and shape an offer that meets their individual needs in a relevant and impartial way. In achieving this, however, a school has to have a dedicated, ring-fenced budget and the appropriate measures must be put in place by the local authority, Ofsted and business organisations, to ensure the school is not just delivering young people with qualifications, but young people who are 'qualified' to make a positive progression from the school to their next destination.

"This is not a one-size-fits-all strategy but there must be consistency in what is on offer to all young people, a clear understanding from schools about what success looks like when young people receive excellent guidance and an accountability, so the importance of getting this right sits up there with attainment and league tables."

News: Labour leader impressed by Rotherham's focus on apprenticeships

By

Ed Milliband MP has praised the way that businesses and learning providers in Rotherham are harnessing the potential of apprentices.

The leader of the Labour Party visited Rotherham College of Arts and Technology (RCAT) whilst on the successful campaign trail for the recent bye-election and met college apprentices working towards bricklaying and carpentry qualifications.

In October Mr Miliband declared that the next Labour government would reform education and apprenticeships - in partnership with business - to create a more highly skilled and highly paid workforce.

Speaking at the college, he said: "It is good businesses that know the value of people doing qualifications and Apprenticeships.

"I'm incredibly impressed by what's happening here at the College. There is fantastic training going on of people - young people and older people. There is brilliant teaming up with local businesses who are offering Apprenticeships, who need the trained workforce, and an incredible enthusiasm from the people doing the training."

James Frith, managing director of U-Explore Ltd in Rotherham is part of Labour's Small Business Taskforce.

Based in Templeborough, U-Explore specialises in enabling schools to deliver reality based careers information, advice and guidance. It has taken on a number of apprentices who have now become valued, full-time employees with the company.

After the event James said: "Making Apprenticeships work for everyone has to be a priority for any government or government in waiting.

"I was pleased to have the chance to pass on our thoughts about how our success with apprentices, who are now our employees, can contribute to re-balancing the economy with sustainable jobs and getting our young people into good work."

News: U-Explore adds enterprise to careers software

By

Rotherham education specialist, U-Explore, is providing advice, inspiration and support to young people who may want to consider taking the plunge and setting up their own enterprise.

Based in Templeborough, U-Explore specialises in enabling schools to deliver reality based careers information, advice and guidance. Their U-Explore national school product is an innovative software solution which engages with young people through cutting edge media.

Recognising the need for more socially responsible entrepreneurs, U-Explore launched the new "Start Your Own Business" application on its national careers platform earlier this year to provide advice, inspiration and support to young people who may want to consider taking the plunge and setting up their own enterprise.

The platform helps students to find their own destinations and the pathways to help them get there, with job profiles and video case studies. Now "Start Your Own Business" features hints and tips on the factors that need to be considered in the very early stages of business start-up, along with case studies of real entrepreneurs sharing their advice and experiences, a comprehensive business plan writing guide, advice on the financial side of setting up and running a business and many other features.

James Frith, managing director of U-Explore, said: "We need more employers, risk takers and entrepreneurs. Where the risk in an idea is embraced, an entrepreneur commits their idea to the economy, employs themselves with others and sets to the task… as an entrepreneur!

"U-Explore supports the need for new entrepreneurs with social consciences getting on with business. Their contribution to the economic wealth of the whole country with well run companies making money, growing employment as producers doing good business, can underpin social mobility and provide repeat opportunity for all."

News: U-Explore mapping out new opportunities for learners

By

Rotherham education specialist, U-Explore, has added interactive maps of the UK's educational establishments to their innovative national careers platform.

Based in Templeborough, U-Explore specialises in enabling schools to deliver reality based careers information, advice and guidance. Their U-Explore national school product is an innovative software solution which engages with young people through cutting edge media.

Featuring all establishments across the UK offering further and higher education and Apprenticeship opportunities, the maps will not only enable learners to make informed qualification choices in a location that is suitable for them, but they will also provide teaching and guidance professionals with an up-to-date tool that allows them to view, research and present all educational establishments when conducting one-to-one interviews or offering careers advice.

James Frith, managing director of U-Explore, said: "The interactive maps are a hugely exciting development for U-Explore, not simply because learners can, for the first time, view all opportunities of where to learn with a bird's eye view, but because they ensure that learners see and understand the wealth of opportunities ahead of them, enabling them to make effective decisions for their future.

"For schools and colleges, the maps represent the most effective way of demonstrating their best offer to prospective learners."

News: U-Explore help residents Stay Safe

By

Rotherham-based education specialists, U-Explore, has developed an interactive platform designed to educate both adults and young people about the safety and security hazards around the home and how to avoid them.

Launched last week by South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, South Yorkshire Police and NHS Yorkshire and Humber, the Stay Safe website invites users to select a character which takes you on a journey around a virtual neighbourhood. In the range of buildings you can investigate to find out more about potential safety and security hazards through a series of 360-degree virtual tours, which include video and other interactive information.

After exploring the homes in the neighbourhood, you are quizzed on your knowledge and can build up a score by identifying and preventing the hazards in a room. The faster you can carry out action such actions such as turning off light switches and blowing out candles, the higher your score.

The new Stay Safe initiative is linked to the Lifewise Centre, an interactive learning centre at Hellaby in Rotherham for South Yorkshire communities. The centre, jointly run by community safety departments from South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue and South Yorkshire Police, is a life-size film set of a small town, which is used to deliver safety messages to the public.

Jon Torn, station manager at South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, said: "As we continue to work to drive down fire deaths and injuries, this online resource offers a new way for us to take our message to the community. Fully interactive, it allows residents to learn for themselves how to reduce their risk of fire around the home and compliments our range of existing educational tools."

Superintendent Eddie Murphy from South Yorkshire Police added: "This interactive site allows members of the public to learn about fire safety and crime prevention from the comfort of their own home. Linked to the Lifewise Centre. Over time the site will be developed further to include other important messages relating to road safety and I hope that the Stay Safe initiative will prove popular with the local community."

News: U-Explore hosts ministerial visit

By

Rotherham education specialist, U-Explore, is hosting a ministerial visit today to explain more about their work providing online careers advice and training to schools, councils and businesses.

Based in Templeborough, U-Explore specialises in enabling schools to deliver reality based careers information, advice and guidance. Their U-Explore national school product is an innovative software solution which engages with young people through cutting edge media.

Wentworth and Dearne MP John Healey and Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury Rachel Reeves MP will make the visit at a time when the number of young people out of work rose over one million in the three months to November.

John Healey said: "U-Explore are making careers advice exciting and inspiring as well as informative.

"This is more important than it's ever been because it's tougher than it's ever been for young people to make that step into the world of work from school or college.

"Unemployment has soared to the highest level for a generation and long term youth unemployment has more than doubled since January last year."

Rachel Reeves added: "I'm looking forward to visiting U-Explore, and talking to them about how they are dealing with the current economic situation in Yorkshire.

"It's great that U-Explore are helping young people get on the careers' ladder. With unemployment at a 17-year high, they need support now more than ever."

News: U-Explore see high aspirations as exam results are published

By

Rotherham education specialist, U-Explore, has published figures showing that aspirations of our young people are still high.

Based in Templeborough, U-Explore specialises in enabling schools to deliver reality based careers information, advice and guidance. Their U-Explore national school product is an innovative software solution which engages with young people through cutting edge media.

As teenagers plan the next steps in their futures, U-Explore has revealed the top jobs that young people are searching for using its interactive careers education information, advice and guidance platform - and the results show there is no sign of our young people's aspirations taking a dive.

Over the last academic year, more than 1,000 different jobs have been searched for by students using U-Explore's flagship education product range. The top result was teacher, with over 3,000 searches, whilst vet was the search result which came in second place.

The most visited industry sector on U-Explore was media, fashion, arts & design, with 21%, followed closely by medicine, law, education & care with 17%. Engineering was the fifth most popular sector.

James Frith, Managing Director of U-Explore, said: "It is great to see such high aspiration shown in what young people in schools and colleges across the country are wanting to find out more about. Media and medicine are the two most prominent sectors and jobs like lawyers, doctors, pilots and police all score highly as careers they want to do.

"Careers information and advice is such an important part of a young person's education and on this evidence, the year-on-year increase in A-Level results is matched equally by the highly ambitious nature of so many young people across the country."

More Rotherham students than ever before have taken their A-Levels this year and the numbers of them gaining passes has risen for the fifth consecutive year.

This year 2,679 students (around 100 more than last year) took academic and vocational A-Level courses and overall 97.7% of students gained passes (a rise of 0.3% on last year).

News: U-Explore powers Youth Inspiration

By

Rotherham education specialist, U-Explore, has joined forces with Downing Street as part of a recently announced initiative created to inspire and raise the aspirations of young people.

What's Your Destination? - www.whatsyourdestination.co.uk - is a new, independent and charity sector-led initiative that aims to make it easier to find and access the many organisations that are working to inspire young people.

The initiative has support from a variety of organisations including the Princes Trust, Facebook, Media Trust, Microsoft and Work Inspiration, and was launched last week by the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister as part of the overall Youth Inspiration initiative. It is currently focused on bringing together all interested stakeholders to help shape the initiative and is set for a summer release.

The Government outlined priorities and packages to support young people into employment which includes U-Explore's work on inspiration. Publishing a paper on "Supporting Youth Employment," Prime Minister David Cameron said: "This is about more than getting our economy back on track. It's about more than improving the jobless numbers. It's about changing people's lives. Showing our young people we believe in them and backing that faith with action.

"It's time to reverse the trend of rising youth unemployment that has held back our country for far too long and help our young people get the jobs on which their future – and ours – depends."

The What's Your Destination? site has been developed and designed by U-Explore, building on its existing technology and expertise, and will now be developed from the initial beta site, which has been positioned to support the Prime Minister's announcement, to the release of the main site in late August.

Andy Pickles, CEO at U-Explore, said: "We are incredibly proud to be developing and powering "What's Your Destination?" to support the Youth Inspiration campaign. U-Explore was set up with the sole purpose to inspire and inform young people about their futures, and the campaign completely resonates with our vision and ethos.

"We are introducing local interfaces in partnership with local authorities such as Lancashire County Council to signpost students, parents and teachers to products and websites to support progression and raise aspirations, and so this was a natural extension to offer our expertise and technology to power a national interface.

"I think it's important to communicate that this is not "another" website for young people but an interface to enable them to find the sites and support that already exist; it's just a case of getting them connected.

"We look forward to launching the main site in August with partners and helping young people to find that inspiration they need to make a positive progression."

In 2009, the Templeborough company helped to create the Work Inspiration toolkit designed to help employers across the country "turn work experience into work inspiration."

News: U-Explore to support footballing apprentices

By

League Football Education (LFE) has signed up with innovative Rotherham education specialist, U-Explore, to offer careers education to football apprentices across the country.

League Football Education (LFE) manages the educational programme for apprentices at the 72 clubs within the Football League. These apprentices join the Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (ASE), which aims to bring out the very best in sporting ability, whilst delivering a high standard of education, too.

U-Explore's educational products support careers education and work-related learning. Their "Job Bank", "Where Could I Work?" and "360-Degree Virtual Tours" packages use cutting edge media to bring careers education to life.

Figures show that after a two-year football Apprenticeship, approximately 60% of apprentices are let go. In line with these figures, LFE intends to use U-Explore to give apprentices access to careers advice across a range of industries.

Providing these young people with in-depth careers education through U-Explore will help to arm those that are not part of the select few to make it in this industry with the tools to build on an alternative career.

U-Explore will help to show young apprentices what they can do with the qualifications, experience and personal skills they already have, as well as pointing them in the right direction for further qualifications.
