The forthcoming 2009 SPE/IADC Drilling Conference in Amsterdam is the venue for the launch of a new TSP (Thermally Stable Polycrystalline) diamond insert by Rotherham specialist, Cutting & Wear. The company, which manufactures and supplies downhole tool products and services to oil service companies across the world has overcome problems in drilling in harsh conditions and at extreme temperatures. Called TSP-Xtreme, the insert will be an important new weapon in the battle to reduce wear on downhole tools. TSP-Xtreme combines the hardness and abrasive resistance of diamond and the toughness of tungsten carbide by encasing a thermally-stable polycrystalline diamond in a tungsten carbide jacket. This new product is designed to give downhole tools improved wear performance and durability, and, in the right applications, could lead to significant cost savings for the industry. TSP-Xtreme is applied using QuickTip, the company's world-leading system for the application of hardfacing to downhole tools. Commenting on this technical innovation, Mark Russell, Cutting & Wear's managing director, said: "Our on-going commitment to research and development ensures that we continue to innovate and solve technically complex problems. TSP-Xtreme, as a world first, is a direct result of this process and something that our customers will benefit greatly from."
