News: Robot causes a stir at TWI
The investment in a new robotic system at TWI has seen friction stir welding enter a new dimension.
The Robotstir system has been introduced at the The Welding Institue (TWI) Yorkshire facility on the Advanced Manufacturing Park to investigate the effectiveness of friction stir welding in welding complex structures from a three dimensional platform.
Since installation, the robot has demonstrated success in a variety of configurations and the system has the potential to benefit welding in the aerospace, automotive and electronics industry.
Tests have shown that the robotic friction stir welding is capable of producing high quality friction stir welded parts and that the system is ready for industrial integration.
TWI Technology Centre (Yorkshire) delivers services focused on the key technologies of fibre laser processing, friction stir welding, laser direct metal deposition and cold spraying.
