News: Rotherham construction site commended

By

Henry Boot has secured a number of awards as part of The Considerate Constructors Scheme 2010, with their construction site in Rotherham named as a runner-up for the most considerate site in the UK.

The Awards recognise sites' excellent standards of consideration towards their workforce, their neighbours and the environment and Henry Boot Construction (UK) received five awards.

Their work to provide structural repairs to airey houses in Catcliffe and Ulley gained special praise.

The project required the installation of exterior brick skins, together with new kitchens and bathrooms to 19 houses in current occupancy by tenants.

Amongst the initiatives at this friendly site was a fitted-out trailer to enable older tenants to choose their new kitchens and bathrooms without visiting the site.

A site cabin gave information to visiting tenants on how the external works were to be carried out and a special CCS-branded caravan was provided to accommodate one family's children while the exterior skin was removed and rebuilt.

Staff identity cards included names in Braille, and names and job title were both displayed on all hard hats. Initiatives with the local school covered both holiday and term times and included the Resident Liaison Officer organising a holiday club where local children were involved with strawberry planting, a competition for building a model house, and an egg hunt at Easter.

A spokesperson for the client, Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council, said: "This pilot scheme has acted as an exemplar project that has enabled us to confidently roll out the same scheme in other parts of the borough. Working with such a good construction partner has helped us gain and benefit from the whole experience."
