News: Solaglas Windowcare shortlisted for safety award

By

Rotherham-based window repair and replacement expert, Solaglas Windowcare, has been shortlisted for the "Best Health and Safety Achievement in Construction" category in the prestigious 2010 SHP IOSH Awards.

IOSH is the world's biggest professional health and safety organisation. It sets standards, provides health and safety training, support and guidance, and campaigns on issues that affect millions of working people.

The SHP IOSH Awards are a highlight of the health and safety calendar and the trophy is one of the most coveted throughout the profession. Judges look at the scale of the achievement and how well the initiative has worked, rather than how much money or other resources were spent on it.

The Solaglas Windowcare nomination is for a working and heights initiative which completely mitigated the risk of engineers falling from height from their vehicles. It offered a practical solution and eliminated a serious risk at a sensible cost.

Previously, ladders were secured on top of the Solaglas Windowcare vehicles and engineers had to climb a ladder at the back of the vehicle to then pull the ladders down.

Following an extensive review and successful pilot, the team are now rolling out a completely new layout, meaning that ladders will be safely stored within the vehicle. Not only does this completely cut out the risk of falling, but it also means the ladders are stored securely.

The initiative was recognised by parent company Saint-Gobain at their annual Diamond Awards.

The 2010 SHP IOSH awards ceremony will take place at the London Hilton, Park Lane, on October 20.
