News: Sheffield City Region to establish one of the UK's first Local Enterprise Partnerships

By

The Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership has been given the green light by Government, in a landmark move that will see local business and civic leaders working together to drive sustainable economic growth and create new jobs in their communities.

Representatives from local authorities and local business leaders submitted proposals to the government in September in order to establish the partnership.

The proposal outlined the main growth areas in the city region, the challenges that remain and what the partnership needs to do in order to grow the economy.

The partnership's objectives focus on the economy and skills (business support, sector development, inward investment, employer-led skills system) and infrastructure, transport and housing (key development sites, strategic transport links, sustainability, broadband, housing growth).

A key priority is to work with the government to establish a National Advanced Engineering and Manufacturing Growth Hub that will drive economic growth in the manufacturing sector nationally, and as a consequence deliver GVA and employment growth in the UK as well as within the SCR. The Hub would be located at the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham.

Business Secretary, Vince Cable said: "Our vision for local enterprise partnerships will help transform the economic geography of the country by creating a new local dynamism that will encourage economic growth and protect business with proper local accountability."

James Newman, Master Cutler said: "The private sector are ready to work with local authorities across the City Region, to lead and coordinate action and investment, strengthen economic growth and rebalance the economy to increase private sector investment and local jobs for local people."

The government also published a white paper on economic development which which sets out the new approach to rebalance the economy and drive sustainable growth by focusing on shifting power to local communities and businesses, increasing confidence to invest and focused investment.
