News: Rix Shipping installs Martek system

By

Innovative Rotherham company, Martek Marine has secured an order from Rix Shipping, leaders in owning, managing and operating bunker tankers and general cargo vessels for their first BNWAS.

Navguard, a bridge navigation watch and alarm system (BNWAS) is designed to monitor bridge activity and detect any operator disability that could lead to shipping accidents. The system monitors the awareness of the Officer of the Watch (OOW) and automatically alerts other staff if for any reason, the OOW becomes incapable of performing duties through an accident, sickness or even a security breach such as piracy or hijacking.

James Doyle, Managing Director at Rix said: "We spent a lot of time investigating which BNWAS system we should install and we finally decided on Navgard.

"It covered everything we were looking for in a system. First of all it had all the type approvals in place that we needed in order to ensure all our fleet could install the same system and we weren't going to incur any additional costs from flag authorities.

"But by far the most important requirement for us was the ease of installation. The Martek sales representative explained to us how the installation process would be much simpler than other brands as the system is modular and cuts out the requirement for interfaces so the alarms go directly to the control panel."

Based in Hull, The Rix Shipping business, a JR Rix & Sons Limited company, includes a fleet of dry cargo ships, a fleet of estuarial and coastal tankers, shipping agents, a freight forwarding operation, haulage contractor, stevedoring services and terminal operators.
