News: Ecodeco awarded South Yorkshire waste facility contract

By

3SE, a consortium set up by the British companies Shanks Waste Management and Scottish and Southern Energy, has chosen Ecodeco technology to build the waste treatment plant that is expected to be located in Manvers, Rotherham.

3SE was named as the preferred bidder by The BDR Partnership in April.

Adjacent to the NEXT warehouse at Brookfield's Park in Manvers, mechanical biological treatment (MBT) technology is to be used to process black or grey bin waste from Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham. This will produce a solid recovered fuel.

There will also be an anaerobic digestion plant producing sustainable energy and a bio-compost. The solid fuel recovered will then be transported to a proposed multi-fuel plant next to the existing coal-fired power station at Ferrybridge, where it will be used to generate electricity.

The supply value of the contract with Ecodeco (part of the A2A Group) exceeds 26 million euros and the Italian company will also receive royalties for the next 25 years on every ton of waste treated.

The facility, which is yet to secure planning permission, will have the capacity to deal with at least 250,000 tonnes per annum and will serve about 350,000 families. It is anticipated that over 40 jobs will be generated.

The companies foresee that the work to build the plant will start in spring 2013 and the first waste will be treated in 2015.
