News: Rolls-Royce deal kickstarts the new nuclear build programme
The £400m nuclear deal between Rolls-Royce and AREVA, that will see the creation of hundreds of highly skilled jobs in Rotherham, is expected to have a big impact on the regeneration and perception of the region.
Rolls-Royce will manufacture complex components and provide engineering and technical services for the first of two European Pressurized Reactor (EPR) projects to be built at Hinkley Point, Somerset where AREVA is providing the Nuclear Steam system.
Once contracted, the work could be worth a total of £400m in revenue to Rolls-Royce for the four EPRs currently planned by EDF Energy in the UK.
Rolls-Royce is investing in a 21,000 sq m facility on the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham. The "Project PoWeR" facility is designed for manufacturing and assembling power vessels for these next generation nuclear power stations.
Lawrie Haynes, president-nuclear at Rolls-Royce, said: "This is an important agreement and I look forward to continuing the strong partnership we have built with AREVA. Rolls-Royce has broad nuclear experience, a strong track record and an extensive nuclear certified supply chain.
"Together with AREVA, we will work to successfully deliver new civil nuclear projects in the UK and around the world."
Rolls-Royce is also the lead industrial partner at The Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (Nuclear AMRC), also on the AMP in Rotherham.
Professor Keith Ridgway CBE, programme director of the Nuclear AMRC, said: "We are delighted to hear this news, which effectively kickstarts the new nuclear build programme.
"This means a great deal to the regeneration and perception of South Yorkshire as a high value manufacturing region."
As the focal point for the bulk of the UK civil nuclear manufacturing industry supply chain, the Nuclear AMRC is acting as an entry way for companies which do not have an existing relationship with Areva, but which have the potential to become nuclear-capable and provide products within AREVA's supply chain.
Professor Ridgway added: "The Nuclear AMRC will play a pivotal role in the development of the next generation nuclear power plants, and we hope we can assist UK companies to successfully compete in the emerging supply chain."
The Nuclear AMRC is a joint initiative between the University of Sheffield, The University of Manchester, and a consortium of industry partners.
