News: ONE gallery opens in Rotherham town centre

By

Rotherham Open Arts Renaissance (ROAR) has launched a new art gallery in Rotherham town centre with their first exhibition - "ONE."

ROAR was established by a group of professional artists to work towards establishing a strong, healthy and vibrant artistic community in and for Rotherham.

The ROAR Gallery is situated in the atrium of the refurbished Imperial Buildings at the top of the High Street. It brings together work from ROAR members under the theme of beginnings, new life and starting points.

In 2010, the organisation opened a mini arts hub in the Grade II listed, Edwardian building. Local artists have taken up residence in units in and surrounding the internal central kiosk offering a range of contemporary fine art and fine craft including textiles, jewellery, hand made books, painting and photography.

Now visitors can experience both the exhibitions in the ROAR Gallery and explore the artist studios and workshops under one roof as well as having the opportunity to purchase works in the exhibitions or art works straight from the artists' studios.

Visitors can also sit amongst the exhibition whilst enjoying coffee and lunches from the surrounding delis and coffee shops.

Matt Butt, development officer at ROAR said: "It's an exciting time for Rotherham and the arts but we need to see it. What's the point in having an abundance of creative people in Rotherham if there is no opportunity to experience, wonder at, enjoy or be entertained by their work?

"We all understand the value of the arts in our everyday life, how it can inspire, change the way we view things or just take us somewhere else for a moment, it can't happen without places like the new ROAR Gallery."

The gallery opens today and runs until April 8.
