News: Martek establishes North American presence

By

Rotherham company, Martek Marine, one of the world leaders in the supply of safety and environmental monitoring systems for the shipping industry, is strengthening its presence within the all-important North American market by establishing a regional office in Houston.

The new office allows the Manvers company to be able to deliver to the North American market the complete range of Martek products and services, for both new ships and retrofit projects, including the Navgard BNWAS system, the Bulksafe Water Ingress Detection System and the new Fastcalgas calibration gas supply service.

Matt Roberts, regional sales manager – North America, at Martek Marine, said: "We have decided to set up a regional presence in Houston in order to get closer to our many customers in this part of the world. The North American Shipping Industry is of great importance and significance to the Global market and having a direct presence will help Martek further increase its share in this region.

"With impending regulatory changes we are seeing a major upturn in interest from North American shipowners and operators in our BNWAS technology, which we will be able to respond to much quicker from Houston. Furthermore, our Fastcalgas service goes from strength to strength in the US market after we introduced stock holding hubs in North America to ensure speed of response is of the essence."

A BNWAS (bridge watch and alarm system) is designed to monitor bridge activity and detect any operator disability that could lead to shipping accidents. The system monitors the awareness of the Officer of the Watch (OOW) and automatically alerts other staff if for any reason, the OOW becomes incapable of performing duties through an accident, sickness or even a security breach such as piracy or hijacking.

Earlier this year, the US Coast Guard approved Martek's Navguard BNWAS system and Martek is already claiming that Navguard is the world's number one system with over 2,000 units sold since it was launched officially in Hamburg in September 2010.
