News: Rolls-Royce submit plans for Project PoWer in Rotherham
As construction gets underway on the first Rolls-Royce manufacturing facility in Rotherham, detailed plans have been submitted for their next factory on the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP).
The 21,000 sq m "Project PoWeR" facility is proposed for manufacturing and assembling power vessels for the next generation of nuclear power stations. It will bring another 180 of the initial 360 jobs from Rolls-Royce.
Again designed by Sheffield architects, Bond Bryan, the rectangular factory will be built in Rolls-Royce's corporate style on 6.84 hectares of land at Plot 9 on the AMP.
The height of the building will be irregular as it will need to accommodate the production of vessels that will weigh 140 tonnes and stand 23 metres high. It will also include a furnace area that will reach temperatures of up to 60°C.
The development will also include office space, a gatehouse and utility buildings. Two new ponds will be created as part of the landscape plan creating a new valuable ecological habitat.
Rolls-Royce considers that its products constitute an advance upon present technology and success here at the AMP may also create opportunities beyond the UK's shores.
The plans have been put together by consultants, URS who are confident of this application being reported to the council's planning board in August.
The delivery of the first vessel is anticipated in 2015.
A spokesperson at Rolls-Royce, said: "Our plans for our new civil nuclear manufacturing facility continue to develop in line with our customer needs. We have completed purchase of the land, received outline planning permission from Rotherham Borough Council and have submitted our application for detailed planning permission."
Simon Spode, marketing manager at the AMP, added: "Coming only a week after the groundbreaking ceremony for the Rolls-Royce advanced blade casting facility, this is great news and further cements the relationship between the AMP and Rolls-Royce.
"It is clear that with Rolls-Royce see the value of the AMP, in terms of the land availability, the relevant skills and expertise in the region, and also the relative proximity to its Derby headquarters."
Work is underway on Rolls-Royce's 14,900 sq m Advanced Blade Casting Facility on the AMP and a third 8,800 sq m building has outline planning permission. The use is not yet known but it could be for another Rolls-Royce facility or for one of their suppliers, creating more jobs on the park.
