News: Julie Kenny wins national manufacturing award

By

Julie Kenny CBE DL, the managing director of award winning Rotherham company, Pyronix Ltd, has been awarded the National First Women Award for Engineering and Manufacturing.

The First Women Awards were established in 2005, by Real Business magazine and the CBI. The First Women Awards celebrate trailblazing and pioneering women, who are in business, genuine "glass ceiling breakers". The awards aim to unearth women whose achievement and individual actions have helped and are helping to remove barriers and open up opportunities for others to follow.

At a ceremony in London last week, Kenny was named the winner ahead of directors from much larger companies such as BAE Systems and BT Openreach.

Clare Balding presented the award to Julie in recognition of what she has achieved as Chairman and CEO of Pyronix while at the same time promoting and supporting manufacturing throughout the UK.

Julie founded Pyronix in 1986 and is Chairman, CEO and majority shareholder of its parent company Secure Holdings Ltd.

Based in Hellaby, Pyronix manufactures an extensive range of electronic security equipment for intruder alarms. Right from the start, there was keen focus on innovation and quality that enabled the company to obtain an initial toehold in the market place. The company now exports more than 50% of its annual turnover to 96 countries around the world. They enjoyed a turnover of £13.3m in 2011 and profits of £4.8m.

Recognised for her services to industry, Julie was awarded a CBE in 2002 in the New Years Honours list. In addition to running the business and being a full time single mother of three, Julie has taken on many other roles including appointment by the Secretary of State as an Intervention Commissioner with Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council, UK Commission of Employment and Skills and more recently, her appointment to the Office of High Sheriff of South Yorkshire for 2012/13.

Julie said: "It's amazing to be recognised in this way but I have to thank all the staff at Pyronix for their contribution towards this success."
