News: Collaboration is the key in advanced manufacturing

By

The recent NAMTEC - AMRC Annual Conference highlighted how local manufacturing companies can benefit from working together with universities at the cutting edge of the industry.

Earlier this year The National Metals Technology Centre (NAMTEC) joined the University of Sheffield's Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) with Boeing and moved across Rotherham to the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP).

Operating from the AMRC campus, the team combines NAMTEC's supply chain support programmes with the AMRC's research capabilities and high-level industrial collaborations.

The 2nd annual conference had exhibitors from a wide variety of manufacturing arenas, including Mayflower Engineering, TATA Steel, VSMPO, Proplan International, Flexitallic and Wilde Analysis.

Hot topics such as the manufacturing skills gap and collaboration between industry and academia were addressed by Keith Ridgway, research director at the AMRC. Delegates were advised on how the latter can positively impact the former through sponsorship of apprentices for the state-of-the-art Training Centre, which is due to be built on the AMP.

Dr Alan McLelland, director of NAMTEC, said: "This year we are really focusing on how universities and businesses can benefit by interacting.

"There are a host of big names already involved without universities, but there are also lots of SMEs reaping the rewards. They are all engaged in the key advancements and changes affecting our industry. There is real value in what can be obtained from these partnerships and we’re aiming to show the pivotal role universities have in our domain."

Other presentations were given by BEL Valves, Rolls-Royce, Nuclear AMRC, Sheffield Forgemasters International and Carpenter Technologies. Delegates given first-hand insight to the future plans of key companies involved in the oil & gas, aerospace and nuclear industries.
