News: New apprentice signs for Rotherham United
Mused Salem has been selected by Rotherham United as the 2013 Apprentice in association with Parkgate Shopping.
Mused was one of 86 young local people who enrolled on the second British Land/Parkgate Apprentice programme run by the Rotherham United Community Sport's Trust (RUCST). The three year programme was developed in 2011 with British Land sponsorship as an investment in local young people, raising their aspirations and inspiring them to believe in themselves to create positive futures.
Young people within deprived districts of Rotherham took part in diversionary sporting activities and team-building sessions, targeted at hot spot areas and times when local residents were experiencing anti-social behaviour. Seven of these young people not in education, employment or training were then selected to take part in a 12-week Get Ready for Work programme.
18 year old Mused was then selected on the basis of his attitude, effort and all-round abilities for the six-month coaching apprenticeship. It is changing his life and giving him tools to engage diverse groups of young people. He has already joined the Sports Trust's Cohesion theme of work, delivering activities to bring together different communities across Rotherham.
Mused Salem, apprentice at RUCST, said: "It feels great to win this award. I started doing this because I just wanted to help young people, like myself, in my town. I wasn't in it to win awards, but now that I have, I feel really privileged. I would really like to thank Parkgate and the RUCST for giving me the opportunity to become an apprentice."
Mark Cummins, cohesion officer at RUCST, added: "It was clear from the start that Mused was an outstanding candidate. He has already made great strides and we hope that this is the start of a long association with the Trust. Parkgate has been fantastic and it is wonderful to see young people being given such unique employment opportunities."
Billy Smith, operations manager at Parkgate, added: "It will be a great pleasure to spend some time with Mused, who shows all the attributes of a responsible and committed young person.
"I have been impressed with this programme from the word go, and in organising and running the various courses, Jamie Noble and Mark Cummins of the Sports Trust have shown true leadership and inspiration in making sure that it is a success."
