News: Apprenticeship challenge continues

By

Rotherham College of Arts and Technology (RCAT) and The Source have recruited 54 apprentices so far at the half way mark in the 100 in 100 Challenge.

After 50 days both Rotherham College and The Source have recruited 27 apprentices each, getting young people into various types of apprenticeships, from Engineering to Retail, in the local area.

The 100 in 100 Challenge began in February with the goal of recruiting 100 apprentices into apprenticeships in 100 days. The campaign hopes to boost the presence of Apprenticeships in the area and to help the local economy.

Stephen Casey, head of Business Improvement at Rotherham College said: "The 100 in 100 campaign is really hitting home and raising awareness of apprenticeships and the benefits they have to the local business community in particular with SMEs.

"Our partnership with the Source is going from strength to strength and together we are well set to over achieve our target of 100 new apprentices."

Richard Nutbrown, sales team leader for the Source, added: "The Source is delighted at the success of our partnership with Rotherham College of Arts and Technology in raising awareness of the benefits of recruiting apprentices and helping local businesses grow. Our aim is to exceed the target of recruiting and training 100 apprentices in 100 days."

Steven Merrington, 18, a Joinery and Carpentry student at RCAT's Rother Valley Campus has recently secured an apprenticeship at Keystone Yorkshire Ltd, a Sheffield-based manufacturer and designer of bespoke fixtures and fittings.

Once he has completed his apprenticeship he will be offered a full time position within the company.

Steven said: "Studying at Rotherham College has helped me a lot. I've met loads of new people and form tutor Terry Elliott has helped loads. I've learnt a lot.

"It felt amazing when I got offered the Apprenticeship. I kept looking on the internet and kept ringing Keystone Yorkshire Ltd and they got back to me. My parents are really proud of me."
