News: Magna is out of this world

By

More than 200 chefs from all over the UK descended on Magna Science Adventure Centre in Rotherham for a recent awards ceremony.

The chefs from the contract catering firm Elior watched 15 of their colleagues cook a meal in Magna's industrial-sized catering kitchen on a giant screen.

Elior's chefs were joined by Magna's head chef Paul Childs and sous chef Murray Twigg for the showcase cooking session, before awards were given out to staff.

Elior provides catering at 650 sites across the country including universities, care homes, museums, football stadiums and military establishments.

Justin Johnson, head of HR at Elior, said: "Magna was just an incredible, flexible venue. The events team there were excellent – we had so many demands but nothing seemed to be impossible. Asking for 15 of our chefs to work alongside their head chef didn't faze them at all.

"The size and diversity of the place also provided an incredible backdrop for our "out of this world" theme. It was an amazing night and delivered at a reasonable cost too."

Amelia Miles, sales event executive at Magna, added: "Events like this show what a versatile venue we are. We have a kitchen that can cater for up to 750 people and space for big and small gatherings.

"In the last year alone we have hosted the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, the Olympic torch, Warp Films tenth anniversary celebration, wedding receptions and various business events."

Magna is the UK's first science adventure centre and is set in the former Templeborough steelworks. It is run as a charity and the cabinet of Rotherham Council recently agreed to continue to provide a £250,000, one year loan facility to the Magna Trust.
