News: CAMRA pulls national beer festivals, Magna to miss out

By

CAMRA (the Campaign for Real Ale) has taken the decision to cancel its Great British Beer Festivals in 2026. Rotherham was due to host the winter edition again in February.

In 2024, Rothbiz reported that problems with a Bradford venue had seen organisers searching for a suitable alternative venue with CAMRA settling on the Magna Science Adventure Centre for the Great British Beer Festival Winter (GBBF Winter).

An increase in costs and a lack of visitors has also put pay to the Great British Beer Festival (GBBF), an event which dates back to 1975.

CAMRA is an independent voluntary consumer organisation headquartered in St Albans, which promotes real ale, cider and perry and traditional British pubs and clubs.

Writing to its members, Ash Corbett-Collins, CAMRA Chairman said that the organisation's finances "painted a stark picture" with budget shortfalls caused by a range of compounding issues.

The GBBF was not held during the COVID lockdown and due to venue problems in 2024. The event was moved out of London to the NEC in Birmingham in 2025. Magna in Rotherham, synonymous in recent years with the Magna Real Ale Festival, stepped in at relatively short notice to host the winter version of the CAMRA event which has previously been hosted in Norwich, Manchester, Derby and Burton-on-Trent.

Shortly after this year's event, Rotherham's CAMRA branch confirmed that GBBF Winter would return to Magna for 2026, due to take place between February 11 - 14.

Corbett-Collins explained to members that: "The Great British Beer Festival and its Winter counterpart did not attract enough visitors to cover the cost of holding them, resulting in a substantial loss.

"Our membership figures – like many other organisations – are simply not growing. The hard truth is we are unlikely to return to pre-2020 levels.

"Our festivals are getting more expensive to hold, with fewer affordable venues.

"The cost of running a membership organisation and business is also increasing. As a result, we will not be holding either of our Great British Beer Festivals in 2026.

"In the simplest of terms, we did not get enough people through the doors to cover costs such as hiring the venue, accommodation for volunteers and buying beer, cider and perry. We are exploring why these events made a loss and identifying lessons learned. Other CAMRA festivals will continue to be assessed through our usual processes to minimise the risk of loss."

News: Swim school looking to make a splash with new Rotherham location

By

A family run business is hoping that the planning process will all go swimmingly as it looks to expand into another Rotherham location.

Super Swimmers was established in 2009 and initially the swim school operated through hire of public and private pools for children’s lessons. it now operates from two of its own locations - Dinnington in Rotherham, and Rossington Hall in Doncaster.

The company has now identified Unit 4 Phoenix Riverside at Templeborough to help address the substantial waiting lists in the area for the type of one on one swimming lessons they offer.

Rothbiz reported on the development back in 2020 and the unit was completed in 2023 but has remained vacant ever since.

As the site is designated for industrial and business use, an application is required to change the use of the 5,740 sq ft unit so that it can be used as a swimming pool.

Rotherham Council raised initial concerns regarding the loss of industrial space that would generate employment.

A sequential test has not been submitted. Sequential tests ensure that development is located in the most sustainable location first (usually in town centres), before other, less sustainable locations are chosen.

Plans include the pool and plant rooms being built on a raised platform, plus a reception/café area with viewing to the pool area, changing rooms and toilets.

Operating hours are shown as 8am to 7.30pm weekdays and Saturday and Sunday from 8am to 4.30pm. In the week, morning sessions would be for adults, afternoon sessions for local schools and children's lessons in the evenings.

With 11 spaces at the unit, plans say that car parking would be sufficient for the staff and customers and operators add that: "they would work alongside the local businesses closing who have agreed for us to use their facilities and the pub car park."

If approved, it is anticipated that 25 to 30 people would be employed at the new pool in a variety of roles including water-based assistants, teachers and administration, management and cleaning personnel.

Directors Ryan Plant and Rachel Turner state in the plans: "Throughout the transition from hirer to owner, we have developed our business models to ensure we are able to provide a positive impact on the local community, provide jobs to the local area and become a popular choice for this important lifelong skill for all our pupils.

"Our business teaches a life skill and is in a sector that is poorly accommodated in a relatively low-income area. We provide affordable life skill lessons with 16 successful years of evidence to support this. We would also be able to offer the local schools a solution to lesson offering for pupils and assist with carbon footprint due to the locality of our premises.

"We are very passionate about our business and the growth of this in areas that we feel would benefit from what we offer."

News: New chief exec at Magna

By

The Magna Science Adventure Centre in Rotherham has appointed a new Chief Executive to forge the future of its visitor attraction and venue.

Richard Hammill has been appointed to the top job having formerly been Chief Operating Officer and Clerk of the Course at Pontefract Racecourse.

Magna, set within the former Templeborough Steelworks, has recently completed a £1.9m refurbishment and upgrade programme; and Richard is now tasked with taking the science adventure centre forward into a new era.

Richard brings 25 years’ experience managing Pontefract Racecourse to his new role. His focus there was to develop the visitor experience, often through innovative events and schemes, improve access for all and grow the gates.

During his time in charge, the independent racecourse increased attendances to achieve an average of 4,500 per race day. Through pioneering work with Autism in Racing, it became the first track in the country to be officially accredited by the National Autistic Society. Under his leadership, Pontefract also set a Guinness World Record and competed against big name courses like York and Ascot to win a host of awards, being crowned the UK Racecourse Association’s Showcase Champion in 2019.

Richard Hammill said: “I feel incredibly lucky to have this opportunity to be part of Magna’s growing journey at this pivotal time and forge its future growth and success.

“Magna is a truly unique visitor attraction and venue, promoting STEM learning to young people in such a dramatic and interactive way, while also telling the story of steel and maintaining the heritage of its iconic building. Businesses and organisations book events here because they’re looking for a ‘Wow factor’ and they get it as soon as they walk through the doors.

“The recently-completed revamp has taken the venue to the next level. These are really exciting times and we’re committed to continuing to invest in Magna in this way. On top of this, our new tram stop, connecting us directly to both Sheffield and Rotherham, is due to open later this year. We are in a very strong position and my goal is to see Magna continue to go from strength to strength.”

Richard looks forward to building business partnerships across South Yorkshire and the wider Yorkshire visitor economy and is focused on extending Magna’s welcome to more people.

Richard said: “I’m keen to broaden Magna’s reach and be as inclusive as possible. Accessibility and sustainability are key areas that I want to focus on, as well as establishing Magna’s role within the community.”

Richard takes over the reins from Kevin Tomlinson who retires after seven years in post at the visitor attraction, education and events venue.

Mike Smith, Chairman of the Board of Trustees said: “Richard brings fresh experience, energy and enthusiasm to the Chief Executive role at Magna and with him in the saddle we look forward very much to him taking the visitor attraction, education centre and events forward at this significant point in our story.

“We’d also like to thank Kevin for his leadership over the past few years and particularly his overseeing of the comprehensive programme of refurbishment which gives Magna such an excellent outlook for its next 25 years.”

Magna is a Millennium Project which opened in 2001 as an independent charitable trust dedicated to STEM learning, protecting the industrial heritage of its unique building and playing an active role in the region’s leisure and business economy.

Magna’s hands-on exhibitions, play areas and activities attract families, schools, groups and home educators from across the UK. This Easter, Magna attracted around 10,000 visitors through its doors with over 100,000 visitors to the attraction annually.

News: Industry and nature grow together at AESSEAL in Rotherham

By

Nature has moved in alongside industry on a Rotherham factory site which now operates without the use of any natural gas.

A one-kilometre Tree Walk now sits within the ten-acre grounds of the AESSEAL engineering base and will be open to schools for pre-booked trips.

The company, which has pledged to invest £29m by 2029 on environmental initiatives, has decommissioned the last of its natural gas-fired heating systems at its Templeborough site.

Last month AESSEAL invited its first official visitors to the walk, which was opened by Rotherham United chairman Tony Stewart and attended by 28 children from St Bede’s Catholic Primary School in Kimberworth, as well as representatives from the Millers, youth sports clubs, business and education, Rotherham Titans rugby club and Olympic Games silver medallist Peter Elliott.

The youngsters may have been unaware of the company’s wider commitment to ensuring their planet has a future but enjoyed a treasure hunt and witnessed the bug hotels, a pond, meadows and woodlands, a wide variety of trees, a hedgehog crossing and hives for 60,000 bees, which are all accompanied by interactive information and facts available by scanning QR codes.

Early doors visitors have included a kingfisher, a fox and her cubs, and a great tit, who recently hatched six chicks in a bird box installed on the trail, the development of which was tracked through a wildlife camera.

Thirty years ago, the site was little more than unused wetlands and fields of mud, with sparse shoots of grass – and that was after reclamation had prepared the site for industrial development.

The area needed business to create gainful employment, but industry tends to grab nature’s home. The make-up of the area, and the world in general, was changing. Someone had to set an example and look to the long-term future.

AESSEAL managing director and founder Chris Rea said that around 25 years ago William Hague – prior to becoming leader of the Conservative Party – was one of the company’s three board members and asked questions about what could be done with regard to the environment as the area was developed for industry.

The original suggestion was to build a pond within the developing site but, like the company, the project grew beyond recognition.

The scene now is very different. AESSEAL’s Factory for the Future, which contains 175,000 sq ft.of new buildings, stands proudly on the land – and alongside it runs the walk.

What may have once been viewed as a contrast serves as a visible, tangible example of how industry and nature can grow together and live with each other to provide the planet with a chance of long-term survival.

Mr Rea said: “It's something that has been created over a long period, and we've just enhanced it and developed it and planted more and more trees and added more attractions like wildlife sculptures, the seal family, brass etching stations, wildlife and plant life boards, as well as providing a home for rescue hedgehogs and bees. Add to that a treasure hunt and we have a fun and educational amenity aimed at primary school children.”

Prior to its official opening staff have been using the facilities – including a picnic and meeting area – which have cost hundreds of thousands of pounds to create and develop. It’s a relaxing, peaceful place to sit and enjoy lunch or to take in the fresh air.

Mr Rea says: “Some people really love it and come out every day. We even have colleagues who come in the depths of winter and put warm clothes on and go and sit at one of the benches, play chess or have their flask of coffee. People like it.

“I think most companies fail to understand that the soft issues, how people feel, their mood, their morale and motivation is just as important as monetary matters. People want to work with nice people, they want to feel that the company they are with is doing more good than bad. The value of high levels of motivation is immeasurable but provides tangible results.”

Mr Rea hopes the company’s work will persuade others to follow its example and adds: “If you pursue excellence, there’s nothing excellent about destroying the environment. There’s nothing excellent about not being a good corporate citizen. There’s nothing excellent about not doing what you can do to continuously improve things. It’s just what we do.” Chris ensures the company is as good as his word.

Replacing old cladding and roofing with new materials has now resulted in the thermal energy balance being sufficient for the site to utilise as much power as possible from the building’s 3,000 solar panels and 2.2MW of batteries.

This means the gas supply will be decommissioned by the utility company in the next few months and there will not even be a supply left on the site.

News: Magtec delivers for Royal Mail

By

Rotherham-based Magtec and Royal Mail have announced that they are trialling cutting-edge electric truck technology, supporting the continued expansion of the UK's largest electric delivery fleet. Supported by an £800,000 grant from Innovate UK, the trial will put the two new 19-tonne vehicles through their paces in real-world conditions, comparing their performance with Royal Mail's existing fleet.

Built in the UK and featuring the iconic Royal Mail red livery, the company’s first ever electric truck will be based at the Greenford Mail Centre in North West London. It will deliver and collect mail to and from nearby delivery offices. Flexible battery options mean that the truck can cover up to 125 miles on a single charge – enough to cover most urban delivery routes. The powerful electric motor delivers the strength needed for heavy loads, while maintaining highway speeds of up to 56mph.

The results of the trial will help Royal Mail and other fleet operators understand the real-world benefits and practicalities of switching to electric vehicles.

Magtec, a leader in electric vehicle components and driveline systems with facilities at Templeborough, brings significant experience to the project, with its electric vehicles already covering over 2.5 million miles on UK roads. It has successfully delivered previous government-backed innovation programmes through the Advanced Propulsion Centre UK (APC) and Small Business Research Initiative (SBRi). The new Gen2 system builds on this proven expertise, offering improved efficiency and reliability for everyday delivery operations.

Smaller electric vans are already an important part of Royal Mail’s fleet strategy. By July 2025, Royal Mail will have over 7,000 electric vans in use across the UK. Most of the vans will be charged on-site at Royal Mail’s delivery offices via a purchased 100% renewable electricity supply, meaning they will be zero-emission.

Royal Mail already has the lowest reported carbon emissions per parcel of any UK delivery company* and aims to maintain this position in the long term. The company’s ‘Steps to Zero’ environment strategy set a goal of achieving Net-Zero by 2040. The company has already reduced Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 18% in two years, with a target to achieve a 50% reduction by 2030.

Marcus Jenkins, CTO at Magtec, commented: “This collaboration represents a significant milestone in advancing EV technology for medium-duty trucks. By addressing the challenges of power inefficiencies and range anxiety, we aim to provide fleet operators with a reliable, cost-effective solution that supports their decarbonisation goals while maintaining operational reliability.”

Anna Pearson, Fleet Innovation and Environment Manager at Royal Mail, said: “We’re excited to welcome the Magtec truck to the Royal Mail fleet. We’ve been rolling out electric vans in our ‘final mile’ fleet for a number of years, and now we want to learn more about how we can decarbonise our national distribution fleet of over 4,000 trucks. This trial will help strengthen our position as the UK's largest electric delivery fleet operator, while ensuring we have the reliability we need for the challenge of delivering to every single one of the UK’s 32 million addresses.”

Martin Welch, Senior Project Delivery Lead at the Advanced Propulsion Centre UK (APC), said: “Magtec’s high-performance electric drive train technology is now excellently positioned to seize a growth market opportunity. As demand for electric vehicles increases both for first-build and re-power applications, so does the need for versatile and effective powertrain systems like those offered by Magtec.

“APC is delighted to see the results of its collaborative R&D projects delivering products to the automotive sector at scale. Making these systems efficient and affordable is essential to enable decarbonisation of the range of commercial vehicles currently in use, while still delivering customer priorities like drivability, range, and efficiency.”

News: Rotherham firms earn King's Award for Enterprise 2025

By

Two Rotherham-based companies have been named as recipients of The King’s Awards for Enterprise, recognising their vital role in growing our economy to improve lives.

For 2025, first time winner, International Energy Products, joins AES Engineering Ltd with the 16th Queen’s or King’s award won by AES group companies.

Based at North Anston, International Energy Products specialises in the production and manufacture of nickel alloys, stainless and low alloy products. Established in 2017 it is part of the International Group of companies which engineer, manufacture, and test high-quality steel products for the energy and defence sectors.

The company has been recognised for international trade. It exports to Europe, the US, Middle East, China and India, and sales reached £7.1m in the year to March 2024. Exports have helped annual sales grow by 122.03% over the last three years.

Emma Parkinson, founder and CEO at International Energy Products, said: "We’re incredibly proud to have achieved the King’s Award for Enterprise. It’s a recognition of our team’s ambition, skill and hard work – and our commitment to keeping Sheffield manufacturing at the forefront of global industry.

"Whilst we’ve already come a long way, this marks the start of an exciting new chapter where we’ll continue to grow, innovate, and champion UK manufacturing on the world stage."

AES Engineering Ltd, the Templeborough-based mechanical seal manufacturer and reliability group serving over 100 countries, has received the King’s Award for Enterprise in the sustainable development category.

The 16th award won by AES group companies is the first to be won by the overall holding company. Previous Queen’s Awards achieved by individual parts of the group have included those for exports and technological achievement.

The group’s core products are manufactured in Rotherham and are used by major industries globally to prevent the leakage of liquids and gases into the environment, thereby preventing environmental damage as well as avoiding a health and safety risk.

AES’s seal support systems have prevented enormous quantities of water being unnecessarily consumed in industrial processes. A total of 42,000 of these systems have been installed around the world over the past decades, saving an estimated 1.6 trillion litres of water – enough to supply the population of South Yorkshire for over 20 years.

These and other savings by companies using group products translate into a reduced carbon footprint and better environmental record by significant sectors of global industry, far outweighing AES’s own direct and indirect energy use, and the cost to the environment of the group’s supply chain.

The AES Engineering Ltd group achieved Net Zero on all scopes in its global operations in 2021 and to date has committed £21m in environmental investments.

The group’s Net Zero calculations, verified by the leading standards body, BSI, show that its global operations had a net benefit to the environment during 2021-24 equivalent to more than 1.1 million tonnes of CO2e saved. That’s approximately the same as the CO2 absorbed by 15 million trees over the same period.

Chris Rea, group managing director and founder at AES, said: "A King’s Award is the ultimate establishment to business award and a huge boost to morale and motivation, but this award is particularly special as it encourages AES Engineering Ltd to continue to invest in sustainability, not least of which is our commitment to invest £29m by 2029 on environmental projects.

“By recognising that a UK based group can combine leadership on the environment and sustainability with commercial success these awards can only inspire others to play a greater part in combatting climate change."

News: Magna’s newly refurbished Fire Pavilion reopen

By

Magna Science Adventure Centre’s hands-on interactive fire zone has reopened after a full refurbishment.

The Fire Pavilion’s refit marks the end of a two-year programme of upgrades across the 24-year-old visitor attraction in Rotherham.

All four of Magna’s core exhibitions – which explore the power of earth, air, fire and water – have now been refurbished with all existing exhibits refreshed, new ones installed and updated information displays added.

Other improvements have been made to improve the visitor experience and invest in the historic former steelworks building.

The full £1.9m revamp has been part-funded by a wider investment in Rotherham’s leisure economy, backed by Government Levelling Up funding secured by Rotherham Council.

Magna Education Director Stuart Ballard said: “It’s fantastic to see young people returning to our Fire Pavilion and exploring the wonders, beauty and power of this most dramatic of elements.

“The refurbishment of Fire completes an extensive period of investment and improvement right across Magna. Our aim throughout has been to future-proof the visitor attraction, with a clear focus on delivering engaging and exciting STEM learning, accessibility and sustainability.

“We now look forward to celebrating the 25th anniversary of Magna’s opening in 2026 and to firing the imagination of many more generations of young people to come.”

Sheffield-based Aivaf, a global leader in interactive exhibit design, fabrication and installation, has been Magna’s partner throughout its refurbishment programme and carried out the £280,000 transformation of the Fire Pavilion.

Managing Director at Aivaf, Bruce Davies, said: “We’re thrilled to bring the Fire Pavilion at Magna back to life again. Our team has pushed the boundaries of interactive design and artistry to ignite an experience that is as visually spectacular as it is educational. Visitors of all ages will leave with a new-found appreciation for the science and power of fire.”

Fire’s new exhibits include ‘Fire Snake’ where visitors can ignite a burst of gas and watch its flames swirl at speed along a clear spiral tube. Youngsters can pilot a full-size helicopter simulator to fly over forest wildfires and extinguish rampaging flames and create ever-changing patterns by moving magnets over a Ferrofluid exhibit.

The iconic Fire Tornado, a floor to ceiling whirlwind of flames, remains the zone’s most photographed selfie centrepiece. And the powerful electro-magnetic cranes are back in action. This exhibit puts young people at the controls to sort old metal cans for recycling; steel, melted down by fire, is the most recycled material on the planet.

Magna Science Adventure Centre is a landmark South Yorkshire visitor attraction and venue which attracts schools, families and groups from across the UK.

Its refurbishment has also included revamps of its reception area, cafĂ© and lifts. A Changing Places toilet has been installed, and 300 fluorescent tubes in Magna’s ‘red wall’ have been replaced with low-energy alternatives to create a stunning new multi-coloured display wall.

Outside, recycled rubber has been re-purposed to make new safety flooring in the 6,500 sq ft Aqua-Tek splash park, which re-opens for May Half-Term.

Magna’s programme of works was just one project part-funded by a £20m investment in Rotherham’s leisure economy, which was secured by Rotherham Council through central government’s Levelling Up initiative. Other attractions who benefitted include Wentworth Woodhouse, Thrybergh and Rother Valley Country Parks, Maltby Learning Trust and Gulliver’s Valley. More details here.

Tickets are available online or on the door. #ManyMagnaReturns annual pass holders can visit the attraction for free as many times as they like over 12 months, after purchasing their first ticket. To gain an annual pass, pay once and then upgrade to a free pass, by filling in a form on arrival at the visitor attraction.

News: Work to start on delayed new Rotherham tram-train stop

By

Work is due to start this weekend on a new tram-train stop seen as a key enhancement in improving the public transport system of the Rotherham area.

Rothbiz reported earlier this year that the £9m project had been delayed by a year and costs had increased for a new stop and park & ride facility at the Magna Science Adventure Centre in Templeborough.

SYMCA has now confirmed that from Saturday March 29 until winter 2025, tram-train services on Saturdays after around 5pm will not be able to operate between Meadowhall South, Rotherham Central and Parkgate.

The temporary timetable changes are to enable construction work to be completed safely by lead contractor, AmcoGiffen.

Legal issues and delays associated with obtaining the necessary railway consents pushed the completion date of the project which is utilising £8.1m from the Transforming Cities Fund - £166m allocated to South Yorkshire by the Government in 2020.

SYMCA has also confirmed that the cost of the project is £9.2m.

The tram-train line runs to the rear of the site and the new stop will be the first since the innovative tram-train opened in 2018. Currently up to three services an hour travel on the existing tram network from Sheffield Cathedral to Meadowhall South / Tinsley, before proceeding over a new section of track linking the tram line to the rail line. It then continues on to the National Rail network to Rotherham Parkgate via Rotherham Central station.

Current proposals will see the creation of two platforms at Magna – one for each running line, connected by a footbridge – with passenger information, lighting, CCTV and passenger shelters. Although the new stop is being designed on heavy rail infrastructure, the stop will provide passengers facilities similar to that of a Supertram stop.

Making use of the existing underutilised parking supply at Magna is seen as a cost-effective way of increasing Park & Ride facilities in the area. Proposals include 100 park and ride spaces, along with cycle parking and electric vehicle charging. The authority has confirmed that it will be free to park at in line with other SYMCA-operated park & ride sites.

The project aims to help to support the long-term viability of tram-train beyond its successful pilot and has been designed to improve air quality and congestion, particularly at junction 34 of the M1, with the overarching aim of encouraging people to think about choosing public transport and active travel over private cars.

When work begins, services on Saturdays after around 5pm will not be able to operate between Meadowhall South, Rotherham Central and Parkgate.

During this time, tram-train services will divert to Meadowhall Interchange. The last service to Parkgate will depart Cathedral at 17:00, and the last service to Cathedral will depart Parkgate at 17:31.

Supertram replacement bus service TT1 is timetabled to connect to tram services at Meadowhall South and will serve Rotherham Central and Parkgate.

News: Magtec secures funding for submarine propulsion project

By

Rotherham-based Magtec, the UK’s leading innovator in electric driveline technology, has secured funding through the Defence Technology Exploitation Programme (DTEP) to deliver a world-first in nuclear submarine propulsion. This game-changing project will push the boundaries of stealth, power efficiency, and operational capability, cementing Magtec’s role in the future of defence engineering.

Through this collaboration with MacTaggart Scott, Magtec will develop Permanent Magnet Motors (PMM) for 26 advanced submarines, drastically reducing engine noise, heat emissions, and overall size. This breakthrough will transform the Royal Navy’s fleet into silent warriors beneath the waves, making detection by adversaries exponentially harder.

Magtec will receive a government grant worth 50% of the project value with the aim of developing innovative new solutions that meet UK defence challenges and increase capability in the UK defence supply chain.

Magtec is a leading UK designer, manufacturer and integrator of electric and hybrid drive systems for customers in the defence, rail and commercial sectors. The company is a member of the British Army’s programme to develop technologies for battlefield electrification and holds an Armed Forces Covenant Bronze Award in the Employer Recognition Scheme. Founded in 1992, Magtec is privately owned and headquartered at a bespoke design and manufacturing facility in Templeborough.

A submarine’s ability to remain undetected determines its effectiveness in surveillance, deterrence, and combat. Traditional propulsion systems generate noise and heat signatures that can be tracked by enemy forces. Magtec’s next-generation Permanent Magnet Motor technology will virtually eliminate these vulnerabilities, giving UK submarines an unrivaled tactical advantage.

Marcus Jenkins, Chief Technical Officer at Magtec, said: “This isn’t just an improvement—it’s a complete shift in how submarines will operate. Our Permanent Magnet Motors will deliver unmatched power and efficiency while slashing weight, noise, and maintenance needs. This is a monumental advancement in defence technology, and we’re proud to be leading the charge.”

Andy Gilligan, Managing Director at Magtec, added: “Magtec has always been at the forefront of electrification, and this project is proof of our ability to deliver world-class defence solutions. The technology we’re developing will provide the Royal Navy with an operational advantage that was once thought impossible.”

News: Rotherham building shortlisted for the RIBA Award

By

The AESSEAL Factory for the Future in Rotherham has been shortlisted for a regional award that celebrates excellence in architecture.

AESSEAL is the fourth largest global manufacturer of mechanical seals and equipment and the latest project has expanded its operations at the global headquarters in Templeborough.

Opening in 2023, the project includes the refurbishment and “greening” of existing plant as well as a state-of-the-art, 60,000 sq ft extension that will almost double the site capacity. It brings the firm’s total investment in Rotherham to over £61m and it is hoped that the global showcase for sustainable manufacturing will lead to an additional £20m of investment in the Rotherham area over the next five to ten years.

The new building reflects AESSEAL’s commitment to creating quality local jobs and ensuring a sustainable future for both the company and the surrounding community. The building is entirely heated by electricity powered by photovoltaics. This has contributed to AESSEAL as a business achieving net zero carbon.

The AESSEAL Factory for the Future by Race Cottam Associates Ltd is one of seven projects that have been shortlisted for the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) Yorkshire Awards 2025.

RIBA Yorkshire Jury Chair Gayle Appleyard, Director of Gagarin Studio said: "The Yorkshire region is home to a wonderful mix of people across cities, towns and rural communities, so it’s encouraging to see such diversity reflected in this year’s shortlist. From the tiny but well crafted pavilion space created for young people within a hospice, to the renovation of a grade I-listed church and a cutting edge factory on a remediated industrial site; it’s brilliant to see the sensitivity and ambition manifest in all these shortlisted projects that evidently create inspiring, sustainable places in which to live, work, learn and play."

A spokesperson for Race Cottom, said: "We are incredibly proud as project architects, involved from conception through to completion, that this project has been recognised by the Royal Institute of British Architects.

"A huge thank you to the team and, of course, AESSEAL for their trust, passion, and commitment to excellence. This recognition belongs to all of us!"

All projects shortlisted for RIBA Awards will be visited by a regional jury, and the winning projects will be announced later this spring.

The winners will then be considered for several RIBA Special Awards, including the RIBA Sustainability Award and RIBA Building of the Year, before being considered for a highly coveted RIBA National Award, which will be announced in summer.

The shortlist for the RIBA Stirling Prize – the UK’s best new building – will be drawn from the RIBA National Award-winning projects and announced in September. The Stirling Prize winner will be announced in October.

WilkinsonEyre won the RIBA Stirling Prize in 2001 for the transformation of a redundant steelworks in Rotherham to create the UK's first Science Adventure Centre at Magna.

News: Year delay for new tram stop in Rotherham

By

A new tram-train stop seen as a key enhancement in improving the public transport system of the Rotherham area, has been delayed, and costs have increased.

Plans were approved last year for a £6.9m project at Templeborough for a new stop and park & ride facility at the.Magna Science Adventure Centre.

Legal issues and delays associated with obtaining the necessary railway consents has pushed the completion date to November 2025.

When South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) signed a funding agreement last year, it said that a start on site was due in Spring 2024 with forecast completion and entry into service Autumn/Winter 2024.

The tram-train line runs to the rear of the site and making use of the existing underutilised parking supply at Magna is seen as a cost-effective way of increasing Park & Ride facilities in the area.

A station with two, 30m long platforms on land next to the car park at Magna is set to be built, further down past the AquaTek outdoor play area. It is described as having basic facilities including a shelter, information boards, lighting, CCTV and cycle parking. A bridge, with lifts, and a fence running between the two tracks are also included.

An update to SYMCA now explains: "After many months of delay, due mainly to obtaining the necessary rail industry consents for the works, this project has now reached the Delivery Phase and final approval is now sought to appoint Network Rail (NWR) to undertake construction of the new Tram Train station at Magna.

"Unfortunately, with the passage of time costs have increased and NWR’s estimated costs for the Delivery Phase have since risen to £7,074,541 an increase of £214,892."

The report states that an implementation agreement with Network Rail went unsigned as the terms and conditions could not be confirmed, specifically in relation to the proposed lease of the new station. Delays were also encountered with obtaining the necessary railway consents required to implement the station.

AmcoGiffen has been appointed the principal contractor and its price has increased, driven by inflation. There has also been an increase in design costs for design management and temporary works.

The project is back by the Government's Transforming Cities Fund (TCF).

Previous transport projects in Rotherham suffered delays due to Network Rail, including the revamp of Rotherham Central station and the tram-train being brough to Parkgate.

News: Recruitment starts at new food outlets in Rotherham

By

A number of job vacancies are being advertised at the outlets planning to open at a repurposed former car showroom in Rotherham.

Euro Garages Limited (EG) received planning permission for the site at Templeborough in 2023. "Riverside Way Services" is set to be operated by EG On The Move.

The plans see the existing 9,000 sq ft showroom being converted into a petrol station building with an ancillary retail store and three food-to-go units. A coffee shop is being constructed in a seperate building to the south of the petrol station, with its drive thru lane running along its southern side.

Now recruitment has started for the site at Ickles roundabout, which has been empty since Burrows moved out to Wickersley. Rothbiz revealed some of the new brands last year.

Chaiiwala, which is known for its authentic Indian chai and delicious street food, is currently looking for a manager, assistant manager and supervisor.

Famous throughout the world and with a cult following, the Chaiiwala menu includes drinks such as Karak Chaii and Chaii Latte and foods such as desi breakfasts, aloo tikki burger and butter chicken roll.

Sbarro is recruiting for a store manager and team leader to serve a variety of pizza flavours including Sbarro’s traditional cheese and tomato, pepperoni and Firecracker Chicken pizza as well as a range of sides including garlic breadsticks, and a selection of drinks and desserts.

Greggs and Subway have also posted vacancies for staff at the new location.

EG On The Move is a leading UK petrol forecourt and convenience retailer, operating a vast network of stores that offer a diverse range of products and services.

More outlets are planned for the Templeborough area. Local development firm, Primesite, secured planning permission in 2023 for a vacant parcel of land between Riverside Way and the River Don. Plans showed that the drive thru would be occupied by American coffee company and coffeehouse chain, Starbucks.

Two proposed food and beverage units have been approved to sit in an area known as "Magna Plaza" along with flexible commercial spaces further along Sheffield Road.

News: Medical equipment manufacturer moves back to Rotherham

By

Wassenburg Ltd, which is a world leader in manufacturing endoscope reprocessing products and solutions, has taken a 10,900 sq ft modern warehouse and office unit at Ignite @ Magna Business Park in Rotherham.

The Dutch-owned company is taking a five-year lease, at a headline rent of £8.95 per sq ft at Templeborough.

The move is made possible by global steel business Danieli moving from Templeborough to a new purpose built headquarters in a prime plot on the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) in Rotherham.

Andrew Betts, Managing Director of Danieli, said: "As part of Danieli’s relocation to the Advanced Manufacturing Park following significant expansion, Knight Frank was appointed to market our former premises which offered a high quality, industrial/business unit, with above average office content. Following strong interest, a letting to Wassenburg was agreed and Nick Wales of Knight Frank Sheffield has been retained to sell the investment."

Rebecca Schofield of Knight Frank, who dealt with the letting, added: “The Ignite at Magna Development continues to prove popular; the premises are of high quality and are well located with easy access to J33 and 34 M1. Unit 4 Ignite was well received to the market and the layout and fit out proved attractive to occupiers. Wassenburg was attracted to the quality of the unit and the split between office and warehouse space, and it is great to see them relocate and expand in the area.”

In 2011 Wassenburg transferred its UK operation from Hellaby to Smithy Wood in Sheffield.

Rakesh Javer, Managing Director at Wassenburg, said: “We are delighted to relocate to Unit 4 Ignite. The high-quality facilities and strategic location provide the perfect base for our operations as we continue to expand and serve our customers more effectively.”

Ignite @ Magna offers easy access into Rotherham and Sheffield. It is also around one mile from Junction 34 of the M1, and also close to Junction 33 of the M1 allowing distribution networks across the entire country. Well known occupiers nearby include ETA, Yorkshire Ambulance Service, Parcel Force and AESSEAL.

Wassenburg was established in 1984 by Gerrit Wassenburg, and has developed from a family company into a global player as an expert in all aspects related to automated endoscope reprocessing.

Since its establishment, Wassenburg, with headquarters in The Netherlands, has grown exponentially and has sales offices in The UK, Ireland, France, Germany, the US and an exclusive distributors network in Europe, Middle East, Australia and New Zealand.

News: Rotherham's first-ever Dutch-style junction?

By

A busy roundabout on the edge of Rotherham town centre could be changed to give priority to pedestrians and cyclists as part of a proposed multimillion pound upgrade.

Rothbiz reported in September that £1.05m of development funding had been released by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) to Rotherham Council to work up an improvement scheme at Ickles roundabout at Templeborough.

A £7.5m scheme aims to deliver "bus passenger journey time savings, improved bus journey reliability, better walking & cycling journey ambiance and mode shift."

The roundabout, which currently has underpasses for cyclists and pedestrians, is at the heart of the active travel schemes from Templeborough to Rotherham town centre.

Now Rotherham Council is looking for expertise from the private sector to work out if it could become a Dutch-style junction, but only if the impact on traffic is "acceptable."

Dutch-style roundabouts would give priority to pedestrians and cyclists with reduced road widths on the roundabout and entry and exit points designed to increase safety by slowing traffic. Drivers would reduce speeds and give way to pedestrians and cyclists on the approach to the roundabout. Drivers must also give way on the exit of the roundabout.

The theory is that slower speeds will mean that road users have more time to adjust and react to others using the road and crossings.

Dutch-style junctions, or protected junctions, separate people travelling on foot, by cycle, and in vehicles. This approach reduces the likelihood of conflicts and simplifies the operation of the junction into fewer stages, resulting in a more efficient traffic flow.

Tender documents for "Dutch Roundabout Design Consultancy" state: "Rotherham Council is seeking to explore available skills and experience in the market place to consider if RMBC can subsequently engage a specialist transport consultant to determine whether a Dutch style signalised crossroads with at-grade pedestrian and cycle crossings can be accommodated at the Ickles roundabout (S60 post code) with an acceptable impact on traffic.

"The junction should also include bus priority. This exercise will be completed before letting a design and build contract as it may allow one of two options to be ruled out, providing much greater certainty."

Funding is coming from the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlements (CRSTS), £570m from the government to the region to bring significant improvements to South Yorkshire’s transport system.

SYMCA's Active Travel Implementation Plan sets out how, by 2040, a fully connected network of walking and cycling routes will link the region, transforming communities and ensure that people have the means and the confidence to leave their cars at home, and choose to travel on foot or by bicycle.

The recently completed Sheffield Road Cycleways project has delivered over 2km of new cycle routes on the A6178 Sheffield Road and Westgate between the town centre and the borough boundary at Tinsley. The route will provide a near seamless connection for cycling from beyond Meadowhall through to the Broom area.

News: Magtec launches second-gen version of zero emissions truck

By

Rotherham-based Magtec has rolled out the second-generation version of the MEV75, its own-brand 7.5 tonne electric truck for daily urban operations.

The zero emissions vehicle has a range of upgrades on the first version, which launched by the Templeborough company last year after achieving GB Small Series Type Approval with the Vehicle Certification Agency and eligibility for a £16,000 discount under the government’s plug-in grant programme.

The MEV75 is designed for operations including last-mile logistics, waste collection and refrigerated deliveries and is ideal for low emission zones. The standard 80kWh version has a range of up to 100km, a charge time of up to four hours and a life cycle of up to ten years.

The second generation MEV75 introduces several key improvements. An optional CCS2 system now complements the existing 22kW onboard charger. This addition allows for faster charging, reduces downtime and broadens access to charging infrastructure.

To meet the increasing power demands of onboard applications, a high-power DC-DC converter has been integrated to manage and charge the chassis batteries. Reliability has been enhanced with the introduction of a printed circuit board-based fuse and relay box. The vehicle also features a quieter power steering system.

For improved driver experience, the new model includes a digital instrument cluster. Additionally, the cabin now boasts a self-regulating heating and air conditioning system for extra comfort.

Magtec has supplied the second-generation MEV75 to customers across the UK, including local authorities such as Nottingham City Council, which is using its vehicle for waste management deliveries and collections. The council said the faster charging offers more scope and reliability for fleet operators while the improved standards inside the cabin helped employees to deliver a good service to residents across the city.

A Nottingham City Council spokesperson added: “Upgrading our electric truck fleet is a crucial move in Nottingham's ambitious plan to become the UK's first carbon-neutral city by 2028. This advanced technology boosts our waste management efficiency, serving our residents better while driving us towards a greener future.”

Islington Council in London has received five MEV75s fitted with cage tippers. Cllr Rowena Champion, Islington Council’s executive member for environment, air quality, and transport, said: “To create a more equal Islington, we're taking bold action to electrify our fleet. These new MEV75s offer a cheaper, more efficient, and greener way to travel. We want council vehicles driving down local streets to be as environmentally-friendly as possible, and these new MEV75s are an important step in tackling air pollution.”

A number of other local authorities have placed orders for the second-generation MEV75, which is available for immediate order with chassis gliders from stock.
